Honestly Bette would sound amazing on So Big So Small (terrible song placement in the show, aside).

Hahaha. If Amy Hollywood Adamsis playing a supporting character, Idina is definitely not the lead.

Someone on ATC is saying they've heard it's Winslet. Could my prediction come true?!
"

Anyone better than Menzel. And Winslet, I feel, looks like Platt's sister. It has to be someone who reads MUCH older.
"

Let's get Bette then. A nice Jewish mother for 40 year-old-readingPlatt."

Yeah!  That or get someone who is not almost 30 and looks 40 to be the lead.

He's already going into it with his looks and age working against him. For most characters, suspension of disbelief, but for a character that is so morally unbalanced due to his unpopularity, innocence and lack of life experience, the character's decisions will not land well.

It's not a real person, there is no "supposed" to be anything. It can very easily be changed if the writers feel like it. They may even name the changed character Larry just to mess with you personally.

Well, if it is Winslet I’m hoping for success means an increased likelihood that she plays Dot with Jake G in a movie adaptation, or Diana, or Desiree.

To be fair, regardless of his actual age I have to agree that he looks older for his age (30+) and is far too old for the character. I really enjoyed his stage performance and am hoping for the best for this movie - but it’s hard not to have some concerns. I mean how many high school characters have a receding hairline? In general, like Alice Ripley in n2n I also wonder if the strength of his performance is oriented for the stage not screen. Maybe it’ll be a surprise though and Ben will become the first person in history to have an EGOT for a single role, lol.

his hairline is basically identical to what it was when he was in Book of Mormon

people in their 20s have been playing high schoolers for decades, it’s gonna be fine

Ben Platt is certainly one extreme talented. His protest of Evan in the OBC was incredible. I am sure he will be great in the film.

However, concerns about his age are valid. You point out that people in their 20s have been playing teenagers for decades. While that is true, it’s not always the best decision.

Also, stage vs. film are very different. A 30-year-old actress playing a high school age Glinda in “Wicked” is very different than an actor who will be in his late 20s playing a high school student on film.

I also think if the movie were released today it wouldn’t be as big of a deal, but it’s very possible that Ben will very close to 30 when filming begins.

Just saying, it will be hard to watch what it looks to be a man in his 30s portray a character who plays along to such convoluted lies and manipulations. Maybe if it wasn't such a coming of age story and just a plain comedy, we would  buy the casting. Here, we also need to buy that this adult is taking things way to far and should know better.

Honestly, they’ll use that CGI stuff on him like they did with DeNiro and it’ll be fine. They only need to shave a couple years off, not 40 like the did in “Irishman”, so I’m absolutely not concerned. Again, this film is ONLY happening so Platt can do it now so I’m happy it’s getting done.

That seems like A LOT of work for Ben to play that role.  A role that could be played as well by an age-appropriate actor.

With that being said, I am also glad the film is being made.  While I don’t agree with the casting of Ben in the film version, I am excited to see the final product and will withhold judgment until after I view the movie.

And I’m honestly just so damn excited about the Amy Adams casting.

Not sure why it’s difficult for people to understand that this film is happening FOR BEN. So it doesn’t matter what extra work needs to be done. It’s FOR BEN. Whatever extra needs to be done here is part of the plan to get the film made. Full stop.

While this is perhaps accurate, it doesn’t mean people won’t have opinions about the creative decisions.

That’s fine but stop acting confused as to why it’s happening and saying it would be better/easier/etc if this or that was done instead. It’s missing the entire point of the films existence.

I can only speak for myself, but I am not personally confused as to why this film is happening and have not acted as such.

And to your second point, people are allowed to have their opinions about the creative decisions being made.

Nobody said they weren’t. I just said people need to stop acting confused as to the decisions because the reasoning is crystal clear.

There’s a difference between confusion and criticism.  I have only seen the latter in this thread.

Just a quick rebuttal to the "actors in their 20s have been playing teenagers for decades" argument:

This is absolutely true, but I feel like there has been a cultural shift in the past 10-20 years, where we are seeing more care and attention put into making high school characters look their age, either by casting actual high schoolers, casting people in their early 20s/late teens, or just doing a better job of casting adults who look young. And personally, I'm all in favor of this new mindset. When I look back at all those movies/TV shows with actors in their late 20s playing high schoolers, it's hard to take them seriously. So just because it's been done before, doesn't mean it should be done now.

I understand there are other factors at play here. I'm not confused about why it's happening. Just responding to that particular tactic for rationalizing it.

Side topic: out of curiosity, I looked at the cast of the film adaptation of Grease. The youngest actors were the two playing Putzie and Marty, who were 22. Most of the “teen” cast were in their late 20s/early 30s (Stockard Channing was 34 when the movie was released).

And they look their ages in that movie.

I know we still see people who look their age play teenagers (shows like Riverdale), but Nickelodeon and Disney have been using young actors who look the characters’ ages for years (I think High School Musical: The Musical: The Series did a great job of casting believable high school students). It can be done.

Kudos to the creatives for realizing how white bread the OBC is and actively trying to fix it.

I'm not entirely sure if the casting of Jared and Larry, and the expanded role for Alana will fix it, but it's definitely more interesting already.
