What’s Up With This Season?!?!?#1
Posted: 8/8/18 at 5:37pm

As a long time member both on this board, and attending theatre in New York, I am curious what’s up with this current Broadway season... not only has it been a really weak season in terms of what’s currently playing, but also for what’s been announced... what I’m specifically puzzled about is why are there so many vacant theatres with no current tenants announced, and why do all these shows appear to be broadway bound, but have yet to announce their transfer? Rarely are there this many open theatres with nothing confirmed for the fall/spring?

Marquis: empty since E2M, nothing confirmed for fall/spring...

Winter Garden: nothing confirmed after SoR closes up in January...

Lyceum: nothing confirmed after PTGW closes up in January...

Imperial: nothing confirmed after Carousel closes up in a few weeks...

Walter Kerr: nothing confirmed after Springsteen ends his run in January...

And this list doesn’t even begin to include likely vacant theatres in the near future: Circle in the Square, Lunt-Fontanne, The Hudson, The Al Hirschfield, The Nederlander, The Cort, The Belasco, and possibly The Broadway...

I know that these shows are Broadway Bound... but none have confirmed yet:
Moulin Rouge, Dreamgirls, The Secret Garden, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, Tootsie, Crazy For You, Jagged Little Pill, Love Never Dies, Hadestown, Beatlejuice, Dave, Girl From The North Country, Tina: Tina Turner Musical...

Less Likely: Sweet Charity (Sutton Foster), The Minutes, Roman Holiday, The Honeymooners, 42nd Street (London Transfer), Bat Out Of Hell, Company (London Transfer), The Bodyguard Musical, & The Woman in White (London Transfer),

I actually think it is an INCREDIBLE season of new work. Very few revivals. That is exciting to me.

NEW PLAYS:

American Son
Bernhardt/Hamlet
Choir Boy
Ink
Network
Straight White Men
The Ferryman
The Lifespan of a Fact
The Nap
The Waverly Gallery
To Kill A Mockingbird

NEW MUSICALS:

Gettin' the Band Back Together
Head Over Heels
King Kong
Pretty Woman
The Cher Show
The Prom

Plus, you've already pointed out several exciting new musicals that could open this season.

I have no complaints. None.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I agree that it's great to see new productions. But do we factor in the caliber / quality of the shows or just say "Yay, something new!" (I.E. GTBBT, SWM, HOH)

Yes, I disagree as well.  The plays this season are amazing and I am so excited for them.  The musicals are not great but have a few gems. I am especially looking forward to Torch Song, Thom Pain (off broadway) and The Prom.

Gettin’ the Band Back Together is Broadway Nickelback.

I would agree about it definitely being a better season for plays than musicals, just like this past season... but the new musicals announced/playing leave a lot to be desired... having seen both Cher Show & Pretty Woman in Chicago neither in their current state will likely fare very well on Broadway... and King Kong, Head Over Heels, Getting the Band Back Together hardly seem to be the next Dear Evan Hansens... All the promos I’ve seen for them do not make me excited to run out and pay $169+ per ticket... honestly the only show I am genuinely ecstatic about is the Kelli O’Hara led Kiss Me Kate as far as for upcoming musicals this season...

There is one empty theatre currently. Carousel announced its closing yesterday. The rest of those closings are months away.

It's August. There are nearly 9 months left in the season. I don't understand the puzzlement?

It would be even better with a Sondheim premiere

Us not knowing what is going into an empty theater does not mean it is unknown to shows/producers.

Waverly Gallery isn't technically a new play. It's making its Broadway debut, but it was a Pulitzer finalist in 2001. It'll be considered a revival under the classics rule, I'm sure.
