King & I being filmed

According to a few reports I’ve read online, the London production is being filmed tonight for cinema release in the U.K. and US this November.

That’s wonderful. No joke intended I saw the national tour last March with Laura Michelle Kelly as Anna and Jose Lima as the King. Kelli O Hara and Ken Wantanabe playing the two leads again might be fun to see.

I so hope this is true. I just wish that they had filmed it on Broadway. I loved the featured Broadway cast members (like Ashley Park!) and thought they were truly 'something wonderful'

Wonderful news if it's true!! It's a shame they didn't film it on that huge Beaumont stage, but I'm glad they're doing it now.

The V&A tends to film West End productions for archive purposes, similarly to the New York Public Library...I've seen a similar sign at other productions and those recordings were never released.

I'd say it could go either way.

Other boards mention producers were papering the house both on Monday and Tuesday to film the show for the archives. Where did you hear about a commercial release?

On the other hand, i'm not sure how they film for the archives in the U.K., but apparently they had 7 cameras in the orchestra and one crane in one of the boxes. Never seen archive footage shot with a crane..

Why would they go through all of that for an archive recording no one will see? Seems a waste of resources (Although I admit I have an archive recording of the Cameron Macintosh version of My Fair Lady that could easily be released commercially, though it is only an archive recording).

That many cameras and a crane indicates the intention for a high-quality end product to be eventually offered to the public, either in a movie theater, like BANDSTAND and NEWSIES, or on PBS, like various productions from LIVE FROM LINCOLN Center.

The thing is, that they will generally claim it to be "for archives" until they know thet can sell it. It's a CYA move to keep from having to pay off the various unions until they absolutely have to.

That was actually sort of my point. Why go through that type of expense if it was merely for an archive recording. Also, my understanding is that the UK unions are somewhat less restrictive than their American counterparts, which would explain why they film shows more often.
