Hard to find Webber releases now on iTunes |
The actual Sunset Suite from the Glenn Close EP is better than the one cobbled together on the recent Unmasked compilation. I think it includes the entr'acte and the music that was ultimately used as exit music? Worth a listen. I think the symphonic suite on the Michael Ball EP may be the same recording without the entr'acte.
The German cast recording (which I bought about 17 years ago on CD) is one of my favorites of all the recordings. I don't know a word of English, but the passion of the characters are striking on this recording.
I wonder why the Glenn Close and Petula Clark Sunset Boulevard EPs were released but not the Betty Buckley one. I think there were also two national tour EPs from the first national US tour and a later UK tour.
It’s interesting to note that the American Premier recording is no longer available for download or purchase but the remastered World Premiere is.

I really wish they'd release Ms. Buckley's performance of this music!

Oh yes, Buckley's "New Ways To Dream" EP for the show is worth every penny, if you can find it. While I do love so many Normas for so many reasons, she really delivers it vocally/technically and theatrically, where others seem to find it difficult to deliver so well on both.
I CANNOT believe that the World Premiere Recording is even still a thing after all the changes that were implemented after. He must earn more from that recording or there is a definite reason why that's getting pushed more than the US premiere version.
Since we're on the topic, my copy of the remastered American Premiere Recording is botched. Some tracks have sound effects like crickets or rain etc. that are supposed to stop after the action transitions from exterior to interior scenes and they don't stop. The crickets, for example, continue on and on all through track 12 even when Joe and Max move inside the house. It's not like that on the original release. Someone messed up the remaster. It's so distracting that I just ended up reverting back to my copy of the original release. The remaster didn't sound all that better anyway. Has anyone else noticed the discrepancy? Is that maybe why it got taken down?

The remaster was a disaster-the door chime keeps going into the next scene, the same with the crickets. They should have left it alone. I ended up finding an unopened copy of the APR of Sunset on Amazon and replaced my remaster.

the Glenn Close Perfect Year is so strange... it's like a dance mix or something

I believe it was an attempt to get the song charting.

Too bad they didn't include the extended 12" mix of "The Phantom of the Opera" on the Sarah Brightman / Steve Harley EP.
I'm also intrigued by that mix of the Glenn Close version of "The Perfect Year." ALW tried it out first as a demo with Sarah Brightman. It was put out as a "previously unreleased track" on a 2005 compilation:

Dr. Jennifer Rinaldi will live on forever. Someone get her a Tony.
