Trivia: Rosemary Harris has already played Mrs. Higgins, in a production of "My Fair Lady" at the Hollywood Bowl in 2003, with John Lithgow, Melissa Errico, Roger Daltrey and Paxton Whitehead.
Saw the show again last night. As expected, Harris is marvelous. She also looks terrific. I loved Rigg in the role too. Harris's interpretation is very different. Each has brought a very personal stamp to the role. Rigg's was a chewy star turn high on a grittty grandeur. Henry must have been very intimidated by this formidable mother, which made for an intriguing idea. With Harris, it's all warmth, grace and elegance balanced with a commanding intelligence. Rigg's Mrs. H was a bit world-weary. Harris's is a woman who will never tire of observing the world. Harris and Ambrose have exquisite chemistry.
She was warm and very charming. She also got entrance applause and a standing ovation at her curtain call. Yes, at 90, she is too old for the role, but it's such a lovely performance that it doesn't matter at all. I feel blessed to see her onstage again.
