After watching tonight's "Younger" I'd love to see her do "Sound of Music." I know shes maybe too old, but I think she'd be nail it and she honestly doesn't look her age.

It could work. Maria doesn’t sing that high; I don’t doubt that she could sing the role.

She's just so damn likable. I think she'd nail it. Maybe as an Encores or something as I don't think we'd get a major revival for quite sometime.

She’s closer to the plucky Mary Martin charm than many who have been cast in recent years.

The odd thing about this property is that people think Julie Andrew + Nun + children and imagine Maria is something she isn’t. Julie Andrews is wonderful in the film and very, very funny - she nails the plucky, tomboyish spirit of this young woman who doesn’t know where she belongs and somewhere along the way made the misguided decision it was to be a nun. But the real Julie Andrews and the Julie Andrews of people’s imaginations are two very different things and any role she went near are often cast in the ‘imaginary Andrews’ mould.

I think Sutton would be wonderful, she would very much be the whirlwind wind of slightly off centre energy thrown into a stiff, joyless household that the role is on paper. I can absolutely understand why some would disagree though, based on Sutton’s vocals alone.

WTF?  Why?  That's a very bizarre response.

I think Sutton Foster would be terrific in the part.  Vocally, she's a great fit for the Broadway score as her range is quite similar to that of Mary Martin.

I didn't know I needed Sutton Foster in The Sound of Music until I heard her sing that minute-long snippet of "Lonely Goatherd." But now I need it, please and thank you.

My first thought was, “She’d be awesome, but maybe a bit too old.” Then I did some research and found out that Mary Martin was 46 when the show opened on Broadway. I guess Julie Andrews doing it at 30 put it in my (and several subsequent casting directors’) minds that Maria was usually younger.

Suffice it to say, I’d be there for this!

I'd love this. We could use a beautiful new production, especially in these political times.

As long as it isn't the horrible Jack O'Brien touring production.

She even said something along the lines of, "I don't think Liza can sing" during the Younger live interview prior to the episode - so that clip's likely her downplaying her crazy talent.

I actually enjoyed it far more than I thought I would.

At any rate, the yodeling at 2:15 reminds me of Lonely Goatherd:

I scoffed at this idea initially, but after thinking a little more... yes, she could be brilliant. And it would be a departure from her more typical roles.

Though Rodgers and Hammerstein worked with Martin to create the role of Maria for her, after she departed they agreed that the piece would be served best by going much younger than middle aged for the role.  That's detailed in the new bio of their collaboration Something Wonderful which I highly recommend!

It's a joke.

Oh.  Huh.  Was it funny?

Though Rodgers and Hammerstein worked with Martin to create the role of Maria for her, after she departed they agreed that the piece would be served best by going much younger than middle aged for the role.

Sutton can easily pass for 30s, I think.  It also depends how they cast the Captain.  When there's a visible 20+ year different, it starts looking skeevy.  And then there's the whole Liesl thing, where it's already a little funny that she goes to a nun for relationship advice, but when they also appear to be similar in age, it ventures into a grey Freudian haze.

But even if Sutton didn't play Maria, she could easily steal the entire show as Elsa Schraeder.  I'd pay good money for that alone.
