Charlotte St Martin |
Sondheimite, I like you and you have a biting way of explaining things that puts a grin on my face; your review post for "Disaster!" comes to mind!
But this thread is going to be locked or taken down very quickly, in my opinion...you may want to at least change the title...
She most likely has more on her plate than light dimmings at the moment. In any event, one would doubt that such a decision would be hers alone to make.
Charlotte St. Martin only cares to dim the lights when a major celebrity, regardless of how tenuous their connection to Broadway is, passes away. She’s not interested in honoring people who’ve devoted their lives to the theater. She’s a media <> only interested in publicity.
That being said, the silence from Jordan Roth regarding both of these theater luminaries is also deafening. When Joan Rivers died, it was Roth who spearheaded the #dimforjoan movement. Yet, he’s said absolutely nothing regarding Maxwell or Beach. So perhaps he too is only interested in taking up the cause as it relates to major celebrities. Another media <<edited by BWW staff>>.
My name is neither "adam" nor "greer."
I've had no patience for her ever since the stagehand strike back in 2007. One of the rare convictions that have lasted me from 14 to 25.

According to photos, the St. James and New Amsterdam both dimmed and had "Remembering Gary Beach" screen/photos on their digital marquee last night (though the New Am was pre-announced and the St. James was not).
This is what Riedel wrote when the Joan Rivers issue happened:
Many producers and theater owners think the dimming of the lights is becoming as easy as, well, flicking a switch.
For years, the honor was reserved for theater royalty. You had to be Richard Rodgers or Ethel Merman or Charlotte St. Martin to deserve a dimming.
But lately the honor’s been bestowed upon second-tier producers, movie and TV stars who appeared on Broadway once or twice, stage managers, press agents — even journalists.
And so the League decided to tighten the criteria.

I saw the photos of the digital tribute at the New Amsterdam, and kudos to Disney for doing that. I would guess that they also were the driving force behind that happening at the St. James, for both Gary's connection to Disney and the St. James (since he won his Tony for The Producers there).
