Lea Michele's SINGING VOICE-Thoughts? #1
Posted: 7/20/18 at 2:46am

Lea Michelle is one of those performers whom everyone hates because she seems "so full of herself" or is a "diva"- In my opinion, nobody has really proven that she's the monster diva that people say she is and no, I don't want to hear people say "Yes, she is!"  and then decline to reveal anything more. But that's beside the point- I'm wanting to hear opinions on what you guys think of her singing voice. To me, she has a fantastic voice, better then several of her peers who had more success on Broadway in recent years. As a Glee fan, one does get tired of her voice after a while given she is given many, many solos, but one cannot deny her quality as a singer. I think her belt can sometimes turn into repetitive wailing(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6LWnG4cwM8), but she certainly has one hell of an instrument IMO.  I think people criticize her flaws in singing more due to resenting her personality/success then the actual merits of her singing voice alone. What do you think?

she’s obviously a fantastic vocalist, among the best that originated on the stage within the last few decades

Her voice is fantastic.

I also think she's not trashy enough to succeed in mainstream music today. You either have to be more "street", "rapper", give arrogant, cool and supposedly funny self-insulting answers in interviews to pretend not to be arrogant, or just be plain weird and off the rails.

On top of that she also has the "anne hathaway effect", where people just seem to be jealous at her and actually prefer to see more flawed people.

Also, the pop world is so ruined at the moment, that younger audiences have no idea about singing voices anymore. So because of that she might not really fit in. But at the same time, they made her sound more pop and less Broadway in the Glee tracks ( which most people know her from), so people might think that her sound is too pop princess for many Broadway roles? That's why she might fall between two stools.

I think she deserves much more, based on her talent and the way she carries herself. She just has bad luck being born in this trashy time. The way she carries herself in interviews, seemingly every respectful and funny in a classic way reminds me of another era. I have never seen her lose her class and sincerity, in any paparazzi moment, interview, even when people were being right out rude to her.

I honestly think it's because her reputation has been ruined by a lot of what people have said about her whether it's true or not. I don't think playing a character like Rachel Berry(which she did so incredibly convincingly) helped her with any of this; in fact, it added more flame to the fire because people think she is exactly like that in real life. She did admit though to being the most like her character out of the whole cast and co-star Naya Rivera certainly thought so as did Matthew Morrison who was asked the question once in an interview. That doesn't add up to her being a monster though. Either way, nobody wants her on Broadway. It's sad, as she can sing circles around someone like Annaleigh Ashford for instance and is a better vocalist then Laura Osnes is.

You might be right. I believe many people in the showbizz world fall for this gossip and jump on this train and fail to look past things like this. It's basically what happens in primary school classes too with bullying.

"reputations" are more often based on illusions than on facts. It's just a snowball effect of groups of people wanting to find a black sheep.

Another thing is, Glee was such a showcase of her talent, she sang such a huge amount of songs, that maybe people feel they have seen all of her, for many times? That, if she would, for example, play Elphaba in a Wicked movie, that it would just sound like a take of Glee? I have to admit that I find it difficult to think of specific roles she would be suitable for. I mean Annaleigh Ashford is a very specific type, plays the quirky sexy, kind of funny roles, Laura Osnes leans more towards classical soprano, which Lea does not to me. So it's difficult.

Oh, that is totally the case- I feel nobody can see her as anything else, I mean, even I have that problem, lol.

She is a masterful singer, not just the gorgeous sound but technically; her phrasing, her breath control...girl can SANG!

She was also very good on "The Mayor".

Do you mean her reputation in the industry is a problem or her reputation has caused the general public to lose interest?

I think Lea is incredibly talented and I wish I could see her perform on Bway again. I'd much rather see her in a brand new musical rather than a revival, but I can see GLEE fans buy tix for any show she'll be on.

As for the whole diva thing, I always thought that was more her character as Rachel Berry but I'll admit I thought it was hilarious to see her *wake up* with Jonathan Groff in his Ham4Ham! hehe! :)

I actually think she says that with a lot of sarcasm. The whole "This is realness, this is morning realness" part and then they both start laughing very hard and he coughs gives it away. To me it's just a fun joke with a wink eye. Of course everybody sees the make up. And of course she doesn't want to look like crap on the clip.

Maybe she asked him beforehand "look, does this make up pass for natural" and maybe he said yes, or maybe he said "you could use some more" and maybe she was naive enough to believe him, but I'm sure they both just laughed about it. I think it comes from a sweet place, not diva.

I do like her voice. Glee suffered from a lack of vision, coherency, and frankly lack of caring by everyone in later years that resulted in it being a poor judge of talents. With a capable director and some discipline/passion, I think she'd be a credit to a lot of different roles.

I also feel like it's unlikely right now. She's still trying to break into TV/movies (Something many broadway stars have tried and failed at) and would be unlikely to come back unless it's for a very plum and career-elevating role (which I also don't think she's likely to be offered at this point in her career). Thankfully broadway is much more open to stars of a variety of ages than hollywood is, so the door will still be there when she gives up the hollywood game.

Now that's just me spit-balling with no judgement. I think, as things stand right now, she is unlikely to be successful in Hollywood and unlikely to be offered a really plum lead role in an opening show (which I suspect she is waiting for. It's hard to go from "OBC lead actress is tony winning musical" to "the 27th Elphaba" and I suspect she would see it as a step down). Not a comment on her talent, I think there's a lot of things she can do really well. Her 'hit' in terms of looks and vocals is spot on for what's popular on broadway right now. Pop-belter with some sharp features, great for playing an 'outsider' lead role.

In terms of her rep and how the world views her...
I've got no idea if she's a nice person. I don't know her, I've never worked for her, I've heard people with great things to say and people with terrible things to say. I'd expect she's a person. She's got good days and bad days. She tries to be nice/generous with fans. She's certainly had a few times when she's been snotty or condescending or 'letting it get to her head'. I think that falls under 'human' and it would be unrealistic to hold her to a standard of never being a bit of a dick to people.

But no, the world does not like Lea Michele very much right now.

- In general we hold female celebs to an impossible standard. This includes the "Anne Hathaway Effect" of sometimes hating them just because they're doing everything right and not giving us a flaw to hate on. If she talks about Cory, she's milking his death for her fame. If she doesn't talk about Cory, how could she possible move on so fast the heartless b**** never cared at all.

- She spent years playing a really annoying character on a really frustrating show. Some people are going to associate their dislike of Glee or Rachel Berry into a dislike of Lea

- In her 'for consumption' private life (by this I mean her public instagram, red carpet stuff, etc, anything of Lea that she is deliberately giving to the public) she often comes off as desperate. Clothes that are more revealing than stylish, trying to connect herself to other celebs (And getting publicly rebuffed), an Instagram that is very focused on making herself look aspirational rather than being fun/real. Again, that's all her prerogative, but I think the way she markets herself makes her look like someone who is trying very hard. Which is a turn-off for a lot of people, especially in women.

She needs some kind of turnaround/reinvention, that's for sure. Perhaps some sort of Taylor Swift's Reputation style meta-commentary on how the world sees her? IDK. She's a talented lady and doesn't seem like a bad person, but what she's doing is not working for her.

This perfectly sums it up in a nutshell as everything she's been trying to do post GLEE hasn't panned out.  Albums failed.  TV series failed.  Endless appearances on talk shows plugging her projects failed.

Its only been 3 years since GLEE ended so its still not too late to reinvent herself.  Others have made sensational comebacks years/decades later so we shouldn't rule her out.  Not just yet, at least.

I have never understood the hostility here toward Miss Michele. I didn't even think her Tony performance of "Don't Rain on My Parade" was so bad, accounting for nerves, minimal rehearsal, etc.

If she's difficult to work with (and I mean "if" since I have no idea), what's that to me?

I recently picked up a copy of the GLEE live concert movie at a used music store for a couple of bucks (and it was in 3D no less). More than once her singing gave me chills. I first saw her as a child in RAGTIME and she impressed me as a truly professional Broadway actor and I still enjoy her work. As for her personal life, who cares? It's like that old anti-Ann Hathaway buzz that went around a while back. If the trolls enjoy it then let them.I also still enjoy seeing Hathaway in anything.

And "in the know" Ryan Murphy apparently recognizes her talents without having any problems. SCREAM QUEENS  and her recent sitcom have kept her busy. She does concerts and puts out albums. I think she's doing just fine. And I believe she announced recently that she's getting married. I wish her the best.

It was a cute clip and I have no problem with her having some makeup on.
