Tried using the search tool but did not find a cohesive thread, thoughts? I want to see this, and it got good reviews, no reason why it shouldn’t right?
Can't imagine it won't, but I hope they find a way to trim it a little bit. It was about 15-20 minutes too long, in my opinion. Some design changes might be warranted too, so it's not so reliant on projections. Hopefully they don't rush it - maybe just ahead of the TONY deadline at the earliest?
Thats certainly the plan, but there's nothing official. Paulus' schedule has been cleared for it.
No way ot opens before April. It needs work, particularly on the book.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I was speaking to someone involved with the show the other day and they told me they’d love to transfer but there’s been zero talk as of late. But they’re all still very hopefully.
I will say that I’m probably the biggest Alanis Morissette fan on this forum. I just know I am.
That said, yes. The book needs a major overhaul. I’d even suggest replacing half the songs in the show with other songs from Alanis’ catalog that would be better suited for these characters. Choosing to write the show with only this one album represented (well, besides the 4 other songs) is a poor choice. She has such an incredible selection of songs to choose from and for a show like this, not doing that just really hurts it.

I thought only 12 or so were from the Jagged Little Pill album itself?
I also echo that the book needs to be cleaned up. That being said, I was invested in the characters and the story. Right now JLP is like a bunch of excellent ingredients, and I want the creatives to figure out how to make the best meal with it.

I feel like this musical is by far the most polarizing I’ve ever read reviews about. Some say the book is trash, but then there’s articles saying it’s “the most woke Musical of our generation”
That's a bummer that there is no buzz to bring it to Broadway. I really wanted to see it but was unable to make it to Boston. I hope it makes the necessary changes it needs to come to New York.
It needs to tone down the “woke” factor by at least half. Pick an “issue” and focus on that. As is, it’s like a Lifetime movie/MTV docu-series mashup that’s just over the top with issues. In general, I really like Diablo Cody’s Writing, but they should really get someone to either replace her or do serious rewrites.

Agreed. It's insanely heavy-handed with issue on issue and theme on theme. I thought the mother's storyline was by far the most compelling and best-told of them all. I probably would've been a fan of the show if they just focused on her story (and possibly made it a one-act show in doing so). It would've been an emotional knockout. Right now, the show gets bogged down by its own self.
Is there such as thing as being "too woke"? Because that's honestly how I felt watching this. It had everything yet felt very very half-baked. Needs to hone in on a specific plot and get focused before Broadway.

It would probably make more sense to bring Idina in for a commercial run, but I thought Stanley ran away with the show and was brilliant. I hope she sticks with it (and I say that as someone who was initially disappointed to hear Idina wasn't doing it at A.R.T.).
They would be smart to try to get Idina, since she sells tickets. Nothin against Stanley, who was excellent, it’s just the business side of it.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this show this week and what needs to be fixed and I realized just how horribly the men are written. The husband is treated like sh*t because he works a lot to provide for the family and, according to the wife (who doesn’t work), that makes him an absent father and a bad husband and when she loses interest in sex for a year and he gets off to porn, well, how dare he. And when I really think about it, what’s the point of the son? Does he exist just so he can say “I saw it”, in Act 2? Having him there just so the daughter can say “He’s the Golden Child!” foesn’t seem enough reason for him to exist in the show.
In addition, having her husband stand over her and sing “What’s the matter, Mary Jane? Had a hard day?” seems so damn condescending to her after what just happened to her. TRhe character is obviously named Mary Jane so someone could sing that song at some point, but that just seemed really off.
Posted this on another thread, but figured I'd put it herre to.....My friend works at the bar West 48 and says she saw Diane Paulus and a group of people outside the Cort last week
I didn't see the show at ART, but I've been a fan of Stanley for a few years and was hoping this might be her "big break" to finally get some semblance of mainstream recognition, at least in the theater world. I honestly think this would do fine without a star. The ART run sold extremely well, plus the number of Alanis fans is kinda endless. I really hope Elizabeth gets the chance to shine in a lead role on Broadway after being a solid supporting actress for many years.
