Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/1/18 |
Also, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Carousel and Summer will not last past December/ January; just because they're making over $900K or $1 million per week does not mean they are going to make the same amount in the fall.
Also, Head Over Heels didn't have a great first full week either.
Glad to see Angels in America doing well, but I know it only started doing really well post-Tony Awards. Anyone know if it transferred in the black from London? I believe it did very well over there. In fact, it was a hard ticket to get when I was in London last year. I didn’t get to see it until 2 weeks ago. So glad I did. A truly phenomenal experience. I believe the National Theatre is a subscription house so not sure how that affects any revenue it received in London and perhaps transferred with. Of course, that is also assuming that the London investors are also the same Broadway investors.
Also, I know Kinky Boots recouped a long while ago, but that low percentage of total possible gross can’t be good.

Oops. I looked at wrong column. I’ll fix it. That is really not good.

I suspect Carousel will definitely be gone by January.

Angels didn't play the West End. It only ran at the National.
HEAD OVER HEELS, ouch.
Angels in America has consistently done well throughout its entire run, and will end that way.
Carousel will probably close in January, but what do you expect when you do what they did to it, honestly.

OOTI drops $90K the day it announces it's on sale for the next 15 months?? It will be lucky to make it to this December, which would be more than respectable for this lovely show. (Though Labor Day seems more likely.)
December/January seems right for Carousel, Summer, and Kinky Boots (and maybe Anastasia and Beautiful?)
According to Michael Riedel, the Broadway production of ANGELS cost $7.5 million –– HUGE for a play. Brilliant as it is, its average overall gross has been 66%.
Poor Head Over Heels...
OOTI on sale for 15 more months????? What are they thinking. It's as if the producer is obsessed with trying to break trends in Broadway producing without realising that some trends exist for good reason..

Thanks. In my brain I knew that, but it somehow came out confused. Thanks. Fixed it!

I'm not a fan of this particular topic, but I agree. It still amazes me how Beautiful has lasted this long! But I think we all know that when Melissa Benoist took over, it basically signaled the beginning of the end...

Thank you, I did not know the cost of it. I just know that everyone loves it and it's gotten so much critical acclaim, it won't be known as a flop.
This isn't a show likely to get glowing reviews, although it might get some good word of mouth as a fun show.
The cost of putting tickets on sale for 18 months, in 2018, is $0.00. The notion (silly as it is) is presumably that it might give a few people the mistaken impression that the show is doing better than it is. Unfortunately, this week's nearly six figure drop tells a different story: these are the weeks in which shows that were marginal (or worse in this case) pre-Tonys have to make their leap if they are to turn things around.
Head Over Heels does indeed seem like the next easy prey. But if you look at the producers, it has "closing to tour" written all over it.
Carousel and Kinky Boots seem like the likeliest to close, maybe even by the end of summer? Summer seems to be plummeting, and I'm curious how well School of Rock and Spongebob will hang on through the summer months. Waitress is holding up surprisingly well, I can't imagine it's an expensive show to run.
I could see Anastasia hanging on maybe up to another year, even, depending on how long Mean Girls and Frozen pull in the big bucks and how the long-term word-of-mouth. I think Bronx Tale closing might be a boon to it (and Waitress) as well, as a pleasant crowd-pleaser that isn't packed to the gills with screaming tweens (mostly).

And your basis on this is...? At least according to people who've seen it, it's actually a fun night out at the theatre (and probably far more enjoyable than Margaritaville.) I commented that it didn't have a good week, but I don't think a closing is already imminent (when Gettin' the Band Back Together starts, then we can talk.)

A show with so-so grosses (I shouldn't say never.) I doubt the pruners would put up the money for the move. Also a smaller scale would mean a reconfigure of some of the set.

Serious question here, I swear I'm not trolling - why is there so much bad buzz for Getting the Band Back Together? I read the summary and thought it sounded cute. Were the out of town tryouts or the clip they released that bad?

Another problem is the fact that The Go-Go's are relatively obscure outside of America. Belinda Carlisle is pretty famous over here in Britain, but few of us can name the group she was once in (The Go-Go's did not have a UK Top 40 hit until 1994, long after Belinda Carlisle had gained recognition there). If you are doing a musical centred on an act with limited international popularity, it needs to be a lot more than a 'fun show'...

Because it's an original musical not based on a movie, book, TV show, etc. that apparently has an awful score and "looks bad" to the normal theatre-going eye. Honestly, so many posters on this board are too empty-headed.
(I bet this is why people hated First Date!)
