Sasson Gabai in TBV |

Sasson was so brilliant and touching in the film. I can't imagine going back to see it again but trying to specifically avoid seeing him, but you know, whatever.

Its James Rana, and I’m not sure how old he is. Gabai is 70, so only a bit older than Tony Shalhoub.

I saw it on Saturday night with Sasson Gabay — the spelling is Gabay, according to the Playbill, although I’ve seen it both ways — and I loved his performance. I have seen it with both Tony Shalhoub and Dariush Kashani, so I have a basis of comparison, and I found Mr. Gabay’s performance the most enjoyable. His Tewfiq seemed more accessible, if that makes sense, and less restrained than the other two, so I was able to follow the evolution of his character throughout the play more easily. Also, he is obviously charmed by Dina, and their interaction is a lot of fun. I wouldn’t say he seems attracted to her at all — that might very well be off-putting, given the obvious difference in their ages — but he seems to find her engaging in a way the other Tewfiqs did not, which livens up the “park” scene a lot.
Obviously others’ mileage may vary but that was my take.
