What if The Band's Visit never opened on Broadway?

All of these hypothetical scenario threads have gotten me thinking about how timing is so crucial of a show's life. Since The Band's Visit was the tony committee's saving grace of the season, what do you all think would have happened if TBV did not open this season, and there were only the other 5 new musicals for the season: Mean Girls, Frozen, Spongebob, Summer, and Margaritaville? It could have easily happened, the whole creative track of the show could have been shifted one year forward or back.

My preference would be that the Tony committee would do what the Drama Critic's Circle did and abstain from awarding a best musical, hopefully teaching everyone a lesson and saying that a "best" musical is an award that is earned. Either that or a Mean Girls sweep.

Oh and if you would like to respond by saying that the hypothetical scenario is pointless to discuss, then please just ignore this thread and do us both a favor. I know I'll be ignoring your comments anyway.

Or they would've given it to SpongeBob, because it was easily the best musical out of all the ones you listed.

All that Best Musical means is: best of the season; not of all time, not outstanding. Best of the season. They wouldn't be teaching anyone a lesson.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The Drama Critics Award is about rewarding excellence (even though we may disagree with their choices sometime).  The Tony's are about rewarding excellence when it is possible; and, when it is not, it is about doing what is good for business and rewarding something.  There have been some pretty miserable seasons, yet most categories produced winners.  I seem to recall that there was one year -- I think it was when Big River won -- when the Best Actor and Best Actress in a musical category were eliminated, presumably because there were no candidates or they were really bad.

In most cases, the awards were still given and a pretty undeserving show IMO was awarded, e.g.,  Big River (the competition was actually an embarrassment); Contact; Memphis (which I enjoyed); Passion (again IMO -- I know it has its fervent supporters, but when a Tony award winning musical closed after 6 or so months, that tells me something); Edwin Drood.  (Did any of those shows really deserve to win Best Musical)?  This season, without TBV, it probably would have been Mean Girls, because it is a hit.

What if the band never got lost and went to the right town in Israel in the first place? Would they have still made a movie about it? Would it have become a musical?
