I think it really makes a statement about inflated ticket prices when a show can take in less than 70% of its gross potential and still rake in almost (or more than) a million bucks.

Agreed. I think it's well has run dry. Tyler Glenn is not helping the show, although he apparently is out a lot. Unless they have a name for the Fall, it needs to close up by New Year's.

Kudos to Harry Potter for its highest gross and avg ticket price thus far! I'm guessing now that it's post Tony's they don't need to comp any tony voters anymore and simply sell those seats at premium ticket prices.

I really hope OOTI will keep the momentum. Also very happy for Three Tall Women and even Angels in America! I really hope Angels will break the $1 million barrier before it closes in a month. I was looking for tickets in July and premium tix are $700 for both parts! 

I came across this article from 1993 where the best seats at Angels in America cost $120 for both parts and apparently that was the highest ticket price on Broadway ever --- at that time! Having done the AiA rush, the rush ticket price for both parts in 2018 is $90.

Adjusting for inflation... $120 in 1993 is around $200 now. Which is $100 per part, for the premium seats. 

$100 on Broadway now can barely get you a rear mezzanine ticket to Summer. I think that says a lot.

Not too impressive, honestly. Fun Home was at $716k (an entire $100,000 above OOTI) the week after Tonys, which grew to high of $817k by mid July. 

I'd argue that the biggest post-Tonys bump was Spongebob, which is just amazing.

Three Tall Women is a BEAST!


I won't say anything about Harry Potter and Mean Girls, those grosses are amazing!


I think SpongeBob is doing good, but not great. Can the show sustain these numbers after summer? I hope it can!

Really...it went DOWN in attendance, and only increased by less than 70K -- OOTI took in 80K more AND an increase in attendance.

Of course, we don't don't know what the near future looks like which is more important than the info this week.

Couple of observations:

1.  Don't know what its weekly nut is, but Chicago continues to be the little engine that could.  Recognizing ticket inflation, which has far exceeded normal inflation since e it opened, it is on target to have its highest grossing year ever, if it sustains business to date for the year.

2.  Interestingly enough, Kinky boots is pretty much on target with gross to date this time in 2016; don't know what its nut is (and how much it has grown since 2016), but -- while unlikely to come within a mile of 2017, due to Urie's drawing power -- I am thinking that, if it can maintain results thus far, it may be around until Jujamcyn exercises its stop clause rights.

3.  Carousel only grossed $18,000 more than 3 Tall Women, despite the size of the Golden.  Living in the age of premium pricing, anything is possible, particularly with limited engagements.

4.  For those of you who predicted adamantly that Evan Hansen's grosses would drop precipitously 3 or 4 months after Ben Platt left, you definitely should be eating crow.  As I said at the time, it has become on of those shows that ha entered the theatrical zeitgeist; and so, to a lesser extent, has Come From Away

5.  Let's face it...when the rubber hits the road, Waitress is a pretty adequate show with a pretty adequate score, despite who wrote it.  Try to listen to the cast recording a few times (I have).  How many of us really thought that it would still be open quickly approaching 1,000 performances, even in these days of inflated runs.  It is a long time since a show has benefitted from replacement casts the way this has.  It will be interesting to see what the producers do after Katherine McPhee leaves, unless they convince her to stay longer.  (I enjoyed Waitress, but mostly because of the story, not the score, which IMO includes a lot of mediocre 'filler' songs among the few gems).

6.  Based on its grosses, it is hard to believe the articles that continually appear about Frozen's ticket sales issues.  Anyone know how far into the future its advance remains super strong?  (I do believe that it was probably helped by its Tony's performance).

7.  Still amazed that Angels only grossed 73% of its gross potential, although I admit that I passed since it took 2 slots (out-of-towner) and I know I can see the National Theatre Live production in a pinch.

It's hard to know, but I wonder how many discounted tickets for performances this last week were purchased for OOTI prior to the Tony win.  I think I agree with you that it could have been a more impressive bump, but I also agree with others who said that the upcoming weeks will give a better picture.  Increasing by $80k and increasing attendance is a good sign though.

Can we please please stop talking about theatre owners excersing their stop clauses? I could count the times this has actually happened on one hand. Mr. Wankel, Mr. Nederlander, and Mr. Roth would not ruin a relationship with a producer by legally kicking out a production. It is usually a mutual decision by both parties with a lot of maneuvering on the part of the theatre owner. 

Plus, Jordan would never excersise a stop clause on his mother. They know Kinky Boots is on its last leg and something is already booked. Expect an announcement soon.

The other thing about OOTI in my opinion is that, unlike the Tony Award for Best Musical, I don’t know if we conclusively understand what the impact of the Tony Award for Best Revival is on long-term revenue. To compare it to Fun Home seems a little bit unrealistic.

The thing about Waitress is its numbers hold up well even when Stephanie Torns the longtime Jenna understudy is singing (like those weeks McPhee was on vacation). I think it's a show that's found enormous popularity with females. Every time I've gone women absolutely love Jenna.

Also I think that a couple of their songs ("She Used to Be Mine," "It Only Takes a Taste", "What Baking Can Do" have sort of crossed over and people who don't even follow musicals know these songs.

Also, no matter who's starring in Waitress, Sara Bareilles' name will always be attached. It'll always be her music, so that'll attract people. I think her recent success hosting the Tonys and with JCS Live will only help, as well.

Bareilles has also been extremely active in promoting Waitress. She not only steps in for short stints as Jenna, she's heavily involved in the casting, she is there to give bouquets to departing cast members, she welcomes the new ones in, etc. It's rare to see a creative so hands-on with a project years after the Broadway premiere.

Kinky Boots has had a more than respectable run. Let it move on to the regional houses.
