Legal Rights to Music for Concert#1

Hi I run a children's theatre/musical theatre nonprofit and I would like to put on a recital/concert. I don't understand how to legally use the music I want to use. I looked into ASCAP but that doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for. I want to put on a show with kids singing broadway songs and maybe dancing a little bit. I'm trying to do it all legally but I don't understand it. Also, does anyone know if I can write a play and insert songs within it? Thanks

Not legally.  If you post this on the bway board you'll probably get more specific answers.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
