What musical from this decade will be the first to be revived? And when?

I think what's most likely is one of those limited run Christmas shows- Elf, A Christmas Story, etc. coming back first.

But musicals I think will become classics and get revived eventually- Once, Fun Home, Gentleman's Guide, An American in Paris. The others that will become classics- DEH, Hamilton, TBV aren't going away anytime soon.

I won't be surprised if the most recent revival of Les Mis comes back either for a limited run.

Matilda, Fun Home, or The Scottsboro Boys.

I feel like a Scottsboro Boys revival would be very well received right now.

What’s funny is how now, many of the productions listed above are considered barrier-breaking and changing the game of theatre. It’s hard to imagine how revivals of said shows will push the envelope further. However, that’s probably what everyone said about “Oklahoma!” and others when they first premiered. I think it’s exciting that we might think of something like Fun Home or Comet as simple or boring in the future.

The Scottsboro Boys? How long will it last until there is a national Black Lives Matter protest to have all involved arrested for a hate crime?

Matilda won't be revived for decades unless someone can find a way to produce it for much cheaper. It appeared to have crazy high running expenses.

I can't imagine Fun Home coming back for at least 10 years given it just left us.

Perhaps a ridiculous suggestion, but if they had a star I wonder if next to normal might be ripe for revival in the next couple years. Maybe the David Cromer Chicago production.

I'd like for it to be Next to Normal.  It just misses the "this decade" mark but I think it's the most deserving/obvious choice.

Fun Home was boring in the past. I have never seen a show before where I wanted to punch every single cast member/character on the stage.

With TBV hype, I’m thinking people might start looking back into Yazbek’s catalogue and find Women on the Verge. I feel like the score is strong and with a retooled book it could be successful.

I hope that comes back as I have heard so many good things about it. I think it has only had a dodgy small theatre company do it the UK.

You might want to see a therapist and make sure that you're not allowed to buy a gun in this country if seeing a musical makes you want to specifically harm the cast members involved for any reason.

LOVE the score, but it may be one of those shows that defeats staging. A recent attempt in London also flopped.

I’m wondering if they’ll ever remount Dogfight, considering Pasek and Paul’s astrononical rise to success following the tears after its 2nd stage production.

It just might be Next to Normal.
What seems to me to be a 1st class production opens at Writer's Theatre in Glencoe, Il., Spring '19; directed by David Cromer.

To expand the conversation a little... Deaf West Spring Awakening was the only revival of a musical from the 21st century so far, right? I wonder what the next will be?

David Yazbek alone isn't enough to sell The Full Monty, but I could see it working better this time.

Also, I think we'll see Light in the Piazza again in the not-so-distant future (and it won't be with Kelli O'Hara as Margaret).

You might want to keep your faux outrage in check, it was obviously a joke or did you really think I was going to storm the stage and start glassing people over a dumb musical *eyeroll

I can't believe no one's got an In The Heights revival in the works, with how LMM's name is just a license to print money these days. It's not been long, sure, but does anyone think it wouldn't sell???

Next to Normal I would also love to see. That's one that has stayed in the current consciousness since its closing.

Of the 2010s specifically? Maybe Fun Home, but not for a while.

There won't be an In The Heights revival for quite some time, all engines are going to get the movie out in 2020.

We're sticking to shows after 2010, right? Dogfight or The Bridges of Madison County. Someone might try again with Scottsboro Boys or Shuffle Along but the first two shows are the only ones I can see being commercially viable with the right cast or approach based on the popularity of their composers. A lot of the flops flopped for a good reason.

I have been thinking of who could ever top the original cast of Bridges. I'd love to see Mazzie and her husband take on the role (the N2N pairing was so novel!). But they'd never sell tickets.

What about a production with Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell? I didn't realise Brian is as old as he is..and the years are progressing for Audra too. But could they possibly have 5-10 years left before they age out of the roles? I think they have the potential of topping the original cast. And maybe Audra will make it a hit.

Love  the Audra/BSM idea of N2N -- Also agree that Dogfight could work.  It's the last decade, but The Drowsy Chaperone would be fun too

I was more thinking bridges for Audra/BSM. But in hindsight a n2n pairing would also be interesting. I think the show needs a name to succeed in a revival and Audra appears to sell a lot of tickets.
