The hype and excitement of E3 this week has had me in that kind of mood to enjoy one of my other loves in life - video games - and got me to thinking - there's been a lot of great musicals done by adapting all sorts of media - but to my knowledge there hasn't yet been an attempt to adapt a video game's story. I could see certain games possibly working either as a commercial endeavor, artistic, or both - some games really do have complex and beautiful stories that could lend themselves to a good musical. Is there a reason nobody's really tried, or, if they have, been successful? Do you think there's something about video games that would lend it impossible to create a decent musical adaptation? Or if you think it would work or just want to dream, what kind of video game would you love to see get the musical treatment?

Yo, I just had a brilliant idea: can we organize a Broadway Stars Play Smash Bros. fundraiser?!
"
That image is Fire Emblem Heroes isn't it? Though Fire Emblem is a series I think that would make a really good and entertaining musical! And I agree - seeing Stars play Smash or Mario Party or anything like that would be a blast. And now I'm wondering who Sutton Foster would main....
Very close- it's Fire Emblem Warriors for the Nintendo Switch!
And hail to the yes...the Fire Emblem series has developed characters, an intricate plot, and a prebuilt orchestral score- it's already leaps and bounds ahead of most musicals these days!
Dude, have you got connections? Because I've got a few connections. Lol. We should totally make this tournament happen! Sutton Foster would strike me as a Zelda or maybe even Pikachu.
Ah right. I always mix the two up. But yeah, it has a lot of story that could be expanded on. Really a lot of games, but especially rpg's, have enough lore and worldbuilding that a decent show could be made out of them. Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Fallout, Legend of Zelda (though Zelda would be pretty tricky - we've seen before what we can get when we try to actually give Link a voice...). And many more.
And alas I don't have connections. I wish I did because this would be fun! For some reason I'm not sure if the actual audiences cross over too much though, which I guess would explain why it hasn't been done. Still, would be neat to try at least. And yeah I can see Sutton as either of those - maybe a Jigglypuff too. Heck, all the divas should main Jigglypuff.
Look no further than the Life Is Strange series. With some imagination, it could work wonders as a musical or a straight play on stage. I also recommend trying out a game called Three Fourths Home. I love its writing, and can totally see it as a straight play in an Off Broadway house.
While the story isnt that great, I would love to see a personal favorite on the stage. The just cause series. Specifically, Just cause 3. I would love to see the sets on that wow. But it would flop lmao

Super Mario Bros would make a great musical comedy. I don’t think we need another Spongebob but out of all the major video game properties, I could see that one working.
The issue is, will the video game audience really want to see their favourite characters singing and dancing?
I could see an arena style tour, in the same style as Batman Live not necessarily a musical
I did some research on this once and found a few attempts. There's been a Pokémon musical (co-starring Andrew Rannells!), a Mega Man rock opera and a Dragon Quest ballet. None were particularly successful but you can watch them online for ideas.
