I hope they don’t invite Robert De Niro back. I an am avid theater goer and it was disappointing that he took the stage to showcase hate on a night of celebration for the arts with a childish mouth. Use your own platform and not on this night. I will not watch anything he is in again and it a shame everyone stood.
Now we ask why our country has such much violence. You have your answer in his hate speech

Posted: 6/11/18 at 7:29amI thought it was just silly because all it did was steal headlines away from the actual awards and he said absolutely nothing new or intellectual. He said exactly what most people in that room already have said before in other ways and this was like preaching to the choir since pretty much everyone there and watching on TV agrees already anyway and it's stuff Deniro has said already too.

I agree he could have been more eloquent- but what would you expect him to do as the US Democracy descends into a fascist dictatorship? Somebody has to do something, Obama, Bush, Clinton- all basically silent as our democratic form of government is transformed- a little each day. Good for De Niro- at least he expressed anger- and if Trump is not roundly repudiated in the midterms- we will have lost forever this great country of laws and ideals- and with it will go artistic freedom- and theater will be sullied and stifled - along with every other artistic expression. If you cannot see that- you are blinded by your own low information knowledge of history.

Both of them have been talking **** about one another before Trump even ran for president and he's already called him a ****ing idiot and a ****ing fool.
Trump definitely is one but who is watching the Tony awards and going ok yeah that made me change my mind about Trump now, I won't vote for him again. It's silly.

Hate speech is the only speech this disgusting sorry excuse for a president knows, and while this may not have been the right platform for this, he was speaking in the only language that Dump and his brain dead supporters understand.

I wonder what his intention was, assuming he had one other than to utter his proclamation. Perhaps enabling the visceral release was all he wanted to accomplish.
But it was not a call to action such as the one Kushner expressed in mentioning the ballot box. It was not an eloquent articulation of why diversity and inclusion are so important as we had in several acceptance speeches.
In some ways it was selfish as an awards presenter to act in a manner virtually guaranteed to generate attention-stealing headlines all about him.
When people are privileged enough to have both the spotlight and the microphone (and an audience of millions) I always hope they use them in the most constructive way possible to actually bring about desired change.

I agree- De Niro could have been more eloquent- maybe finally that responsibility will be assumed by our former presidents- who stand by and collect their millions while our country day by day descends into a fascist dictatorship.

Why was he even on the broadcast?
His long Broadway history?
His "acclaimed" co direction (in name) of "A Bronx Tale?"
Giving him airtime just feels like an attempt to create controversy.

Except De Niro isn't known for controversy. He's normally rather reserved.
Now, had they asked Michael Moore to present, who actually had a show this year, I would agree it was just an excuse for controversy.

As tasteless and classless as I thought De Niro was, I’m not so much mad that he said it—I’m mad that he is now hijacking all the headlines this morning from the winners. And most especially that Page Six made him the lead story of the Tonys and then misreported how many Tonys The Band’s Visit won (it says they won seven when they won 10). Clearly now nobody gives a sh!t about the accomplishments of theatremakers last night because they’re all giddy about De Niro being so brash.

Often, when you get a special Tony Award, the recipient gets to choose his/here presenter. I believe the two men are friends.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I agree that the focus on reporting should be winners of the Tonys- this is what the night was all about- not De Niro. Laurie Metcalf is rapidly becoming Broadway royalty.

You can say what you want, but at the end of the day, no Russian smear nor calling out Trump can restore sanity in the U.S. Trump is not the problem but a symptom; the real problem is the failing system that gave us Trump. Where do the candidates get most of their campaign funding from? And who do you think they would actually serve--those that gave them the money or the general public? Do you know you DO NOT have the right to vote for the president under the constitution, only the right to elect the elector to vote on your behalf? Do you know half of the country is suffering and gig economy has made a living wage unreachable for a lot despite the fact that they are technically "employed"? Do you know Jeff Bezos would rather have ambulances sitting outside of some warehouses rather than paying for air conditioning? Do you know Flint still don't have clean water? Trump didn't cause any of this. Neither did Russia. It's time to take a look at what is really happening outside the New York bubble.

De Niro hate speech? You guys are joking right. We have a president that said there were good people among the nazis and racists at charlottesville. A president who callled african american players sons of bitches because they were protesting police brutality. A president that disparages transgender people by not wanting them to join in the millitary. A president who calls immigrants rapists. so NAH get out of here with your criticism of De Niro . De niro has the ballls to stand up to awful people like Trump. Your words fall on deaf ears when your selective outrage is so obvious.

I agree what De Niro did was selfish, but in a different way. Those mere seconds are going to cause more harm, in the long run. We already know by now, Trump has childish ways. He retaliates. Trump will get even with De Niro and the people in the room who gave him a standing ovation. I predict furthers cuts in government funding for the arts. Trump will do this and in his mind think "Let them insult me...I'll show them".

I dislike Trump as much as anyone and thought his outburst was pointless and virtue signaling. We get it, Trump is bad. What is sad is that his standing ovation took up valueable broadcast time that could have been given to some of the recipients to finish their speeches. If he wanted to make a difference, he could have encouraged people to vote or donate or take action.

As someone whose abstract thinking is often limited, I wanted to address a question to Dancingthrulife2. I admire your "big picture" train of thought, but what can actually be done about all the problems you mentioned? I'd want to make a difference as much as the next gal...but I'm just one person. Exactly !! It was a "all about me" moment for him. All night long people were making their political points but they were doing it with class.
