The NY Times article said voters were voting "against the commercialism" of the other musicals. It showed.  Show was okay, but not great.

Apparently it's not worth 9 Tonys as it won 10.

Band's Visit is worthy of 10 TONYS

You're right. It was worth all 11.

One of the most beautiful productions and shows to grace Broadway.

Be it 9 or ten, I stopped counting. I still don't think it deserved all it got.

NINE OR TEN....DON'T CARE.....LIGHTING DESIGN?  REALLY?????  The protest vote per the NY Times was more than obvious.

I'll take subtle any day over garish.

Not a troll. Didn't think S/Bob or MG were all that great.  For musicals, this year was lacking all around. For what I spend on theater tickets every year, I have a right to speak up, especially when the news documented voters voting to protest the commercial nature of recent shows prior to the Tonys.

And the irony is that the best play went to the most commercial of the lot. Just like in theme park ville. Universal is winning and Disney is loosing

Haven't seen the show yet (seeing it this summer) so I can't really say my opinion on if it deserved it or not but I do get tired of these "sweep" nights. I also wish some really strong shows like Groundhog Day, Come From Away, and Waitress had opened in a year like this instead of in the Hamilton/Dear Evan Hansen/Hello Dolly juggernaut years

Bands Visit was a bore and didn’t deserve any Tonys - win for Lighting Design? Stage was so dim and that slow lazy Susan and those songs - I enjoy suble but this was 90 minutes of boredom - if they had an Intermission people would leave

The Band's Visit is a lovely little set piece with fine performances by all, especially Katrina Lenk. It is really more like a play with incidental music than a traditional Broadway musical.

This show was a safe landing point for all voters who did not want to choose between the two mighty revivals of My Fair Lady and Carousel. Or the double and triple threat lead actors and actresses of the two who spend two and a half hours on stage and spend the rest on costume changes.

Perhaps voters could not choose between Carousel and My Fair Lady or perhaps this should be taken as advance notice that New York is growing tired of revivals of the Golden Era shows.

Whatever the motivation, it is not in the interest of the New York theater industry to bury the classic musicals whose songs are already familiar to most of the customers.

Don't see why it won sound, lighting, actor.  There were better choices.  The NY Times voter interviews made it clear their vote wasn't for talent, but to make a statement.  And so it was made.  The set is a depressing visual and the sound uneventful.  Tony was so understated, he was at times, boring.

And yes, Come From Away deserved more than it got.

Isn't it amazing that a musical with an original idea like Hamilton is now a brand name. Something that a lot of people want to see. Its truly an amazing thing

Ol Blue Eyes, the Band's visit was competing against Mean Girls, S/Bob, Frozen as new musicals.  My Fair Lady, Carousel, and Once on this Island are revivals.

MG, SB, & Frozen weren't to write home about. However, I agree with Robert16 that it didn't deserve lighting.  S/Bob should've commanded that at least along with Ethan from S/Bob.  And yes, it was more like a play with occasional music than a musical.  No there wasn't much to pick from, but it didn't deserve the sweep of awards deservedly earned by Hamilton.

Just a question... Do the same group of voters vote for both Best Play and musical?

I'm sorry the Tony voters did not validate your opinions. They failed you.

The same voters all vote for all the categories.

The moment when the run rises in Answer Me is one of the most beautiful and striking stage images I’ve seen. That might justify the lighting win.
