He took his own life in his hotel room in France. I'm very saddened by this; I've always enjoyed watching him on Parts Unknown. Mental illness is everywhere and isn't always outwardly evident. Please, seek help if you are struggling or know someone who is.

Woah.   May he be at peace.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

A lot of people who knew Tony are still in shock. He gave me a huge break in 2003 as my first celebrity interview when I was writing about the TV show The Restaurant. Despite his "Bad Boy" image, Tony actually was a gentleman. Saddened beyond belief.

Very little surprises me anymore, but when I saw the headline yesterday, I audibly gasped. I was shocked and saddened. I've been a fan since reading the book that made him famous, Kitchen Confidential almost 20 years ago and then his first TV series, A Cook's Tour in 2002. I've spent hundreds of hours over the last 16 years watching him travel the world. He's had enough incredible life experiences for any 10 people, things the rest of us could only dream about. Best sellers, Emmy awards, beloved and admired by millions, rightfully viewed as a icon by both the culinary and travel journalism industries. And yet he succumbed to depression, one of the last people you would have expected to suffer from it.

Endlessly curious, a gifted storyteller, someone with as much respect for an African tribesman or a Southeast Asian operating a food stand as for a head of state, he used food to break down barriers, explore other cultures and show the world not only shouldn't you fear people who are different, but underneath the exterior, they're more like us than we could have ever imagined. He will be truly, truly missed.

Gone too soon...missed by many...may he be at peace!

Bigots, business owners, corporate board members, lobbyists, and trust fund babies are voters too!

I watch very little non news TV.  Parts Unknown without question my favorite TV show!
