Betty Buckley @ Joe's Pub |

I saw the Saturday show and she was really great! First time seeing her live so I have no basis of comparison - and I have no idea what your yardstick for "thrilling" is, regarding past performances - but there were definitely some truly thrilling moments during the show I saw. The vibe in the audience was great. I also didn't have a problem with her song choices. I love that she's so into rock... she does Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell justice.
She's definitely older and doesn't move like she used to, but she also seems pretty tough and if she trains physically and vocally over the next few months, I could imagine a really strong and enjoyable Dolly when autumn rolls around.
(I'm not nearly as well-versed in a lot of the Broadway stuff as many of the message board contributors here, so I might not know what I'm talking about)

I mean, no one would call Hello Dolly vocally demanding. No offense to Bette, but when we left my friend said to me "She was good, but I'd like to see a singer tackle the role." So I think Buckley will be fine vocally. But I'm not sold on the character as a whole. I feel like once divas get to a certain point they're pretty much just playing themselves, so I'm curious if she creates a whole character or what.

Betty Buckley was a terrific Big Edie a couple of years ago at the Ahmanson, where she played an extremely convincing crotchety old lady, with a voice to match. I listen to the OBC of 1776 and EDWIN DROOD when I want to hear Buckley in her prime; those were indeed thrilling performances. Anyone planning to see her in DOLLY should not expect any of the vocal pyrotechnics of her prime, of course. But I wonder if her natural-born charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent (thank you, Ru) will be enough to carry the show without her signature power notes of old.
Buckley is certainly unique and the voice is changing with age, for sure. However, I think she can handle Dolly. Betty is, at heart, a charming cowgirl. She has a warm smile and pluck. She tends towards darker material, but she can do broad comedy. Also, Dolly isn't necessarily a "happy" role. Bernadette has said in interviews that Dolly is at an impasse in her life and the show is about rebirth. Betty is a master storyteller in song. It's what she does. I believe her "Parade Passes By" will be sublime. She will bring the pathos and the resolve. I'm not concerned. I do wonder how producers feel about her strong and vocal anti-Trump presence in social media. That could affect sales.
That is a good point about her social media. I get the sense that she has mellowed out over the years, on some levels, but she's not at all shy on social media about her politics. I wanted to add that during the Saturday Joe's Pub performance, she was quite funny. She cracked a joke and then sort of half-seriously said she was working on her delivery, because she knows she's never been a comedienne and she wants to find the humor in Dolly (I am paraphrasing, I don't remember exactly what she said). As the night went on, she definitely succeeded in making us laugh here and there with funny stories. I think she'll do well.
I get a huge kick out of the interview videos of her that are available online, most of which are relatively recent (last 10 years or so). Her whole attitude about life, her career, and various other subjects is inspiring and fascinating. I don't know how much of the gossip I've read (re: her "antics" in the past, for lack of a better word) was true. I'm inclined to believe a good deal of it is exaggerated, but I could be wrong. Even she has admitted that she was a pain in the butt in the early years of Eight Is Enough a million years ago. It appears as though all the time spent on her ranch in Texas, riding her horses, and the focus on meditation and spirituality, has done her good.
Loved her performance as James MacAvoy's doctor in the movie Split a year or two ago. I'm soon due to rewatch Carrie to get my fix of her Miss Collins!!!!
