Harry Potter Tech Spoiler Question#1
Posted: 6/4/18 at 7:55pm

I have a tech question about a lighting effect for Harry Potter. It's not a spoiler per se but asking the question does give away a plot point.

How did they do the lighting effect for the time turner? That was one of the best lighting special effects I've seen on stage in while, and my friend and I were debating how they did it. My guess is there is a projection of the highlights and shadows "warping" projected onto the set. Anyone know?

Yes, there's another post in the preview thread (I think) that was just posted a few hours ago that confirms its exactly as you said. If you sit in the first few rows it's a lot more obvious, when I was in the Dress Circle I was amazed.

And it is awesome from the balcony also. I wad told by a friend that you don't get the full effect from those box seats.

It didn’t get old for me. I was in the dress circle smack center, and each time I was like WTF? On a good way: I thought it was brilliant. Worth a Tony alone in my opinion.

Why bother to use the Spoiler Content feature in your OP just to spoil the plot point in this post?

I loved this effect. I never got tired of it. I was in Row M in the orchestra.

I want to know how they do the fireplace stunt. The fire appears to be real!  Does anyone know?

Yes!

It is indeed real fire! When someone goes through it, the back wall of the fire place flips down to cover the fire grate, and the fire itself also temporarily turns off (simple gas fire I believe?)

As for them going through it, it's actually just like a 4 foot tall slide, like on a playground! They just slide down it, the wall flips down, and then they pop out.

I saw in Row F of the orchestra and thought it looked awesome from there, loved it every time, and it certainly boggled my mind at first.

It's a technique called "projection mapping." If you look carefully in each of the house right and left uppermost box seats you'll see a large box in the same wallpaper as the walls - those are two of the projectors. The third is on the rail in the center but covered in detailed wood moulding to blend in with the theatre. The three different angels are needed so that they can project around the set pieces without there being shadows behind them.

It is very hard to talk about this production. Can't talk about the plot and even too much talk about effects gives a lot away. I can only openly talk about it with the two other people i know who saw it. 3 after tonight.
