Saw Mean Girls and I didn't expect to go away feeling the most empathy and emotion for Gretchen. The song she sings in act 1 kinda tore me up. The song was so good and Ashley Park's interpretation of it made me wish the whole show was about her. I honestly stopped caring about the rest of the plot.
But I took Ashley Park's interpretation as there is something really wrong with Gretchen. Depression or some type of mental illness? One of the lyrics in her song is "Mama called me beautiful don't believer her anymore". I mean damn. I wasn't ready for that.
It felt like the show took a really dark and sad tone for Gretchen's song and then it was all happy funny and I wanted to know more about Gretchen and never got the chance cause shes given nothing to do in act 2.
While I haven’t seen the show, from context in the film and cast recording, Gretchen likely has very low self esteem as a result of being whittled down as a person to be Regina’s subordinate.
Gretchen has based her whole high school existence around following a person who socialally abuses her, but puts on a happy face because it ultimately benefits her socially.
Yes for sure. The little things she does during the song and her facial expressions. I could really see the sadness in her eyes. And how she changed emotions on a dime like her mind is fighting with itself. I definitely see why she was nominated for a Tony. Hope she wins.
The iPhone line in the show says it all. She’s not ok. Gretchen, as written in both the movie and the show, but more so in the show, suffers from extreme anxiety and probably high functioning depression as well. Regina suffers from body dysmorphia and most likely has an eating disorder.
