Anyone have any thoughts on what may happen to Spongebob once the Palace goes under renovations? I’ve seen some comments suggesting they may relocate to the Marquis

Are the Palace renovations actually happening? They seem so bizarre.

I feel like if a show can pay the owners enough, they’ll keep putting off the renovations. I’m not sure Spongebob would move as opposed to just closing, but who knows with Viacom.

I'm personally a bit worried about these plans tho. Im sure they have experts and all doing it, I just hope if it happens nothing goes terrible wrong with the lift. The landlords I am sure cant wait to free up all that times square space. (Im also not a fan of moving the entrance around the corner, but as is their marquis gets lost among all the adds.)

Honestly, anything to better soundproof it. Every single time I’ve seen a show there, I’ve heard sirens, honks, you name it.

And moving the entrance is a good idea because the theater as of now hardly has a marquee and it’s a nightmare with all the foot traffic in Times Square.

The latest info I could find was from January. The developer was looking for an addition $1.3 Billion.

Well, for what it's worth, I have ushered in various theatres on Broadway as well as seen shows there. I honestly doubt that the issue of outside noises such as sirens and car horns being an issue is not one limited to the Palace alone.

As for the construction. It's pretty much dead in the water. Nederlander was having issues getting the right licensing to do a construction project of such scale. Not just for the building but they had to contend with the fact that they want to do major work on a building that has landmark status. I mean, it's been pushed back and pushed back so far that I don't think it's going to happen anymore. They were going to do it after American in Paris, then one thing or another got in the way, then sunset now SpongeBob. So, I doubt it to be a thing anymore.

Sidenote: can someone remind me, are they doing the renovations at the Cort Theatre still?

Looks like it's getting closer to becoming a reality:

If they acctually go through with it, and it looks like they are they will probally close in August and announce a closing in the next couple of weeks.

The calendar on the Spongebob website (and Telecharge) has always shown tickets available through September 2nd, so I would assume that would be when the show closes for Palace renovations.
