Next for the marquis theatre? |
But I mean there is also gypsy with Imelda (she said it was now on for this coming season) The marquis theatre really needs a hit. That hotel curse must be real

I try to avoid the Marquis. It feels like being stuck in an unpopular mall.
Though I enjoyed Shogun, 9 to 5, and Follies in the actual theatre, it's mall-like entry has always dampened my excitement of attending a night on Broadway.
I said this in the Margaritaville Closing thread as well... the Marquis doesn't seem to be a house for hits. I believe that On Your Feet was its longest runner since Millie closed almost a decade and a half ago.

I actually feel the opposite, pretty much because I really hated that movie, Moulin Rouge!.

This is a million percent true, but I tend to think that all it takes is the RIGHT show. The Gershwin hosted bomb after bomb until Wicked came around and turned a pretty unwelcoming barn into its home. The Lyric was disaster city until a remodel and Harry Potter. I feel like the Minskoff didn’t have a hit until The Lion King moved in (and it has that weird alley like entrance and is also lacking charm). I do totally agree that the Marquis is an unappealing theater. But I’m still convinced that if something great enough (and with broad enough appeal) opened there, it could undo the curse of short runs. I’m not sure any of the named shows looking for a space are that show, but time will tell!
I believe I recall predictions from many moons ago in a similar discussion where a lot of members talked of rumors/insider info that a little show called SpongeBob Squarepants was eyeing/circling the Marquis. Since I very much trust the words of these people, I'll bet all my life savings on that being the next show for the theater.

I pity the crew that has to make THAT transfer if this ends up being true. Imagine moving that behemoth of a set into a new theatre!

behemoth of a set? It's like a bunch of foam and crap. The actual "set" for the show is crap. I don't get it.
And the actual theater for a show means nothing. The Marquis probably has the best location/signage for a theater. And yet it can't really get a long-running hit. I mean, Drowsy Chaperone made its money back, no? But yeah, the actual theater is pretty boring and feels like a road house in Nebraska.
"Gypsy" is not coming to NYC.
The longest running show was "Me & My Girl." It was a big hit and won 3 Tony Awards.

I’m guessing “no” for Dreamgirls. Friedman doesn’t usually bring her shows into Nederlander houses. A fairly reliable source also told me that she’s hoping to get the Imperial for it.
Moulin Rouge seems more likely to me to go into the Winter Garden when SOR finishes, but that’s just a hunch."
Then that would be quite a Homecoming for Dreamgirls

Hopefully this will mean another revival announcement!
But wasn't DreamGirls announced for the Neil Simon after Angels closed?
I swear I read this a while ago.

The Cher Show is coming to the Neil Simon after Angels closes
Having seen it, this revival of Dreamgirls is not massive by any means, and I actually can't even imagine it in these larger theaters everyone is mentioning. It is very much on scale, if not smaller, than Beautiful in terms of set and production, with just more choreography. That being said, the Marquis is probably the best fit of the ones mentioned above. But I think it would fit better in something like the Broadhurst.

If Dreamgirls comes in, it needs to go back to the original please ... The "reworked"London version was busted. The wigs are a mess and the costumes and sets look like Swarovski threw up all over the stage.

If the show comes in, it's gonna be the London production. They're not going to start over from scratch.

If you knew how much Local 1 gets paid for load-outs and load-ins, I really doubt that you would be "pitying them"!

Oh, I know.... A girl can dream though. Ugh... I would bet it gets a critical drubbing here. Its so bad....
I'd sooner bet on Moulin Rouge. This theatre is a barn that requires a spectacle to fill it, and Moulin Rouge is not a show one does with any speck of minimalism

Oh, I'm well aware of how well IATSE pays for things like this- I was talking more about the inconvenience of having to pack all that stuff up only to move it across Times Square. But again, it's good money!
