Imogene Heap's music for CURSED CHILD#1
Posted: 5/27/18 at 1:29am

While watching the play I kept getting this familiar feeling to the music. I love her music and listen to ELLIPSE and the Frou Frou cds the most. I have her other recordings also. Decided to pull up SPEAK FOR YOURSELF the day after seeing it because the music sounded like her earlier solo stuff. After some research I found that she used new arrangements of songs from that cd and a song from ELLIPSE along with some new music.

From what I gathered she did new arrangements of the following songs from SPEAK FOR YOURSELF (DELUXE)

THE WALK
HEADLOCK
GOODNIGHT AND GO
HIDE AND SEEK
THE MOMENT I SAID IT

And a song from ELLIPSE:

HALF LIFE

Thought I would share for any fans of the music in the show or of Imogene Heap. Hope she gets this new music out this year because it is excellent!

Now it makes sense why the music was not nominated.

If you do a search on Spotify for "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Soundtrack," there's a playlist with all of those songs on it, plus 5 others.

I actually found them on Spotify first but did some more looking around to make sure they were the songs. It appears to be a playlist put together by a member and i just wanted to be sure.

I went into some fan sites and other places just to make sure.

Dancing, you are probably right. And I wish it was all new as it is wonderful and would deserve a nom.

I'm glad someone put together a playlist, since who knows if the show's arrangements will ever be compiled into an official release. I love listening to those songs and being transported back to the theatre.

She said at some point it will be released but she hasn't had time to get into the studio.

When i heard she was doing the music i was more excited, almost, about hearing it than the play itself. Her music just enhanced the entire experience.

I don’t think some of it is even new arrangements. I think Half Life and Climb to Sakteng are just straight up the instrumental tracks, which can be found on Spotify.

Speak for Yourself's deluxe cd has the instrumental tracks. I don't like Spotify. I have google Play unlimited.  Made my playlist there.

The Showbill lists 2 choirs for additional vocals.

I am assuming Cycle Song, Climb to Sakreng and Entaglement are the instrumental versions from the deluxe SPARKS cd.

I also detected a hint of FIRST TRAIN in the initial scene at the train station. I love what she did on the Potter score and hope they do release a recording of it sometime.

She tweeted some time last fall or so that it's happening and that she's hopes it would be early this year, but obviously that hasn't happened as of yet. She hasn't said anything since that tweet (I don't think), but it seems like it's just a matter of when rather than if,  which is great. I doubt she would have tweeted about it at all if it weren't slated to happen. Now, why would she need go into a studio though? Can she/they just not take the tracks from the show and put them on an album, or is there something I'm missing? Needless to say, I'm buying it the very moment it becomes officially official that's it's available.

She did say in a brief interview, I think I opening night here, that she just hasn't gotten around to getting into the studio. I would assume that there would be some remixing done for an audio release.

In general I liked the music in HP, but there were quite a few times especially in Act 2 of Part 1 where I thought the music was so inappropriate and intrusive that it took me out of the play.

There were other songs from ellipse used as well. They definitely used a-ha and blank canvas.

The use of hide and seek when they first see hogwarts was the most confusing to me. The words took me out of the moment. It’s a song that many people are familiar with... it just didn’t seem appropriate.

Yeah, “Hide and Seek” is quite literally a meme. Odd to have it included here- is it the “mm whatcha say” hook?”

the song when the kids are dancing with the Wands very early in the show is an instrumental of “Cycle Song”

And some of the other ethereal sounding bits through out the show I picked up were from “Neglected Space”

I love that she reimagined some of the songs for this

I was shocked when I read that “Hide and Seek” was included after I had already seen the show. I thought for sure I would have noticed it, since I knew the song and read that it wasn’t even an instrumental version, but it didn’t jump out at me when watching the show.

So when I saw the show again, I paid attention to that moment, and sure enough you hear the lyrics “Hide and seek” and then the following line about sewing machines.

i love Heap’s music in the show and would absolutely buy an album if/when they release one. Does anyone know if the opening of Part Two is a piece that is original to the show or an older one?

I wonder if it was her decision to use this music or if they chose her because they thought this music would work in the show?

I would guess that it was John Tiffany/the creatives. Tiffany has a history of using existing music to great effect in his plays (see Let The Right One In. I still listen to Olafur Arnalds’ music because of that show).

Yeah, the piano part of Arnalds’ song Old Skin from the album For Now I Am Winter was used a lot in that show.

From listening to some Spotify playlists, I think it could be Headlock (Instrumental), around 1:12 in the song, if I remember the scene correctly. Or is it Minds Without Fear? Maybe someone with better memory can confirm.

I love the music and movement in this play. Add me to the list to buy the recording as soon as it's released.

4. Cycle song (wand choreography)
5. The walk
6. Wait it out
7. Cumulus
8. Aha (train music)
9. Headlock

Part one act two
10. The beast
11. Tiny human
12. Have you got in you
13. Half life (staircase choreography)

Part two act one
14. Mind without fear
15. Neglected space
16. You know where to find me
17. Canvas

Part two act two
18. Entanglement
19. The moment I said it
20. Climb to sakteng
21. Closing in
22. Goodnight and go (ending)
