Way Too Early 2019 Tony Predictions thread |
These are my Tony win predictions for some of the play categories, based on what I've seen, and regardless of future openings:
Best Play: To Kill a Mockingbird
Best Director: Sam Mendes
Best Actor: Bryan Cranston
Best Actress: Elaine May
Best Featured Actor: Tom Glynn-Carney (I just have a feeling about this one.)
Any consensus on the best musical nominees?
been off the thread til now and from reviewing, seems like the most vocal support and consensus is for:
Hadestown-already predicted to sweep by many
Tootsie-lots of support and great out of town reviews
The Prom-great reviews and social themes the tony voters love
Be More Chill-sold out fast pre broadway and generally favorable buzz
with some support for:
Beetlejuice
Aint Too Proud
after the pummelling the Cher show got by NYT, i cant imagine too many tony voters will throw away votes on it....
this seems to match up with out of town and off broadway reviews for all the shows. ive only seen aint too proud which is terrifically entertaining, but the book is not the best
....so this will be a fun season of seeing many great new shows after hearing so much on the bww board about what a crappy season this was going to be.....

I think that now it is Oklahoma! Vs. Kiss Me, Kate! for best musical revival (Oklahoma will probably take it because, in my opinion, it seems like the better production) I can also see whoever plays Corie, Curly, Ado Annie(Or Aunt Eller), Jud(or Will) getting nominations. Also, likely nominations for best set, direction, and orchestrations

How can it seem like the better production when we haven't even seen what Kiss Me Kate will offer yet?
I think that the Oklahoma revival coming in is going to cause more of a stir then Hadestown did when it comes to races. I don't think we can really judge how it will do in the best revival category as we have NO idea what Kiss Me Kate is gonna be like right now. I actually think that Oklahoma is the likely underdog of the too unless Kate is a huge misfire. But this 100% throws more competition into the acting nominations as I am SURE it's gonna see good chances for leading actress, leading actor, and features actress.
I could definitely see "Oklahoma!" bringing in bigger names like Phillipa Soo as Curly, Audra McDonald as Aunt Eller, or Joshua Henry as Curly. Those three would FOR SURE get nominations. Although, I think Damon will be a strong contender for best actor because he's fabulous. I'm seeing "Oklahoma!', Be More Chill, The Prom, and Hadestown in April. I will report back about those.

^From what I understand, the entire original Off Broadway cast have been offered their roles for the Broadway transfer. Also none of those actors that you suggested would work for any of those roles in this production.

OKLAHOMA could very well be the most Tony-nominated musical of the year, if they give it 5 acting noms (one per category with two in supporting actress) and it does well in the craft categories. Lots of unknowns, but there's a lot of potential.
Hadestown
Tootsie
The Prom
Be More Chill
The Cher Show
*Beetlejuice seems like the wrench this season. With improvements, it can content for a lot of awards.

That sure would be an ambitious casting choice! Though it still wouldn’t be the strangest thing about this production.
@Something Peculiar
Potentially, But considering it’s not eligible for Best book or best score, it seems unlikely that it would get more nominations then, say, Hadestown.

"I meant Phillipa Soo as Laurie LOL! also the casting descriptions for the show fit Joshua, Phillipa, and Audra but whatever.
Nevermind, Joshua's age doesn't fit, but Phillipa fits the description for Laurie and Audra fits Aunt Eller.

I genuinely can't imagine The Cher Show getting nominated for Best Musical. I think the rest of your list is spot-on.

Granted it's extremely unlikely to happen, but I'd much rather see HEAD OVER HEELS get a spot over THE CHER SHOW, just to reward its originality and execution (not to mention its persistence).

I would also LOVE for Head Over Heels to get nominated! I could definitely see Stephanie J. Block getting nominated for lead actress for Cher Show but I think it has a 50/50 chance of getting a best musical nomination.
I genuinely cannot see Be More Chill getting nominated for much, let alone a Best Musical nomination.
My predictions for Best Musical: Hadestown, Tootise, The Prom, Beetlejuice, and if there's a fifth option either Ain't Too Proud or Cher Show. Hadestown will win.
