Fair enough! I'm excited too and already bought my own ticket... you never know what'll happen, but I think with that premise, that creative team, and those two powerhouses, it'll be hilarious.

Derrick Baskin is definitely get a nomination for Leading Actor in a Musical for "Ain't Too Proud". He carries the whole show in his back.

With some more shows opening, I'm expecting nominations a few things:

PROM for best musical, lead actress and supporting actress, Score, choreography

CHER for Stephanie J Block, Jarrod Spector, and Costumes

To Kill A Mockinbird for nearly everything for plays

Network for best play and for Bryan Cranston

Also, is Burn This with Kerri Russel and Adam Driver still happening? That could rack up some noms as well.

Once Head Over Heels announces its closing, I'm assuming that Burn This will take the Hudson.

With Hadestown announcement, I have my early predictions for the musical acting categories:

Best Actor: Santino Fontana, Tootsie

Best Actress: Stephanie J. Block, The Cher Show

Best Featured Actor: Patrick Page, Hadestown

Best Featured Actress: Amber Gray, Hadestown

Feels too early for there not to be a surprise this season -- a performer who emerges, or a show that comes in at the last minute. Circle in the Square and the Helen Hayes are, presumably, still in play for this spring.

My thoughts exactly though Best Actress still looking to be a nail biter with Kelli. The rest though is pretty solid predictions at this point.

I feel like we JUST got our comes in at the 11 o'clock hour surprise with Hadestown announcing for this season rather then wait it out til next. The only other thing on the backburners that could possibly be a contender would be Girl From North County and this might cause them to back off a bit. That's the ONLY thing I could see making things a bit more exciting for the Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Music, but I don't think it would effect acting awards much nor the design awards.

Girl from North Country would be smart not to transfer this season. Hadestown is a far superior show.

Agreed hence why I think we just had our last BIG contender announcement. However, with OOTI announcing their closing just now, it DOES open Circle so something COULD come in. They would be unwise to do so, but they COULD.

I see a huge sweep for Hadestown, at a minimum getting musical, score, and book. I'd say they're a lock for both featured acting categories. They'll also likely pick up set and sound design, however, think costume design will go to Cher Show. Best Actress will be a toss-up between Stephanie J. Block and Eva Noblezada. Best Actor is a lock for Santino.

Given the size of the role and the praise she’s being getting, Noblezada will be no competition.

I still believe OHara is the one that can beat Block, but if Cher Show gets in Best Musical, SJB is winning this.

Ephraim Sykes in Ain’t Too Proud. Can’t see someone reaching the highs and lows Sykes is able to access in his tour de force.

He’s a well-liked guy onstage and off. His performance is sensational. He’s been a secret weapon in ensembles for years. I count myself among the many who’ll be rooting for him.

While I don't think Ain't Too Proud is a particularly good musical overall due to book problems, Ephraim Sykes was terrific as David Ruffin and the choreography is outstanding.

Not to mention Tootsie and The Cher Show, pending reviews. (And Oklahoma, if that happens to come to CITS.) When you list it out, even though this season feels like it's all about the amazing plays, there are actually some great musical races shaping up.

Though really... I don't envy the nominating committee when it comes to these well-reviewed/buzzed about plays, never mind the several inevitably great ones that are opening in the spring. I mean, you could get an entire Featured Actor in a Play category out of The Ferryman, and every nominee would be justified. I wouldn't be surprised if we see several categories with more than 5 nominees.

So Stephanie Hsu. I'm a fan of Be More Chill, but nothing crazy. (I think it's fun...that's kind of it). But I love Stephanie and just want her to get more recognition because she is hilarious between this and Spongebob. Does anyone think she could get a nomination of some sort?

Certainly possible that she could score a Featured Actress nomination - it really depends on how the show itself is reviewed. But she's definitely a crowd favorite, so it wouldn't be out of left field if she gets recognized. I think Amber Grey and Beth Leavel are both shoo-ins for the category if they're considered supporting. Also Sarah Stiles in Tootsie... Leslie Kritzer... the Chers... there will be some competition. But Hsu is in the conversation for sure.

Does Orfeh stands a chance? She's my MVP.

I think featured will be a crowded category.

Amber Gray - Hadestown
Sarah Stiles - Tootsie
Beth Leavel - The Prom
Emily Skinner - The Cher Show
Stephanie Styles - Kiss Me Kate
Leslie Kritzer - Beetlejuice
Micaela Diamond - The Cher Show
Lili Cooper - Tootsie
Kerry Butler - Beetlejuice
Stephanie Hsu - Be More Chill
Teal Wicks - The Cher Show
Orfeh - Pretty Woman
Bonnie Milligan - Head Over Heels

Those are the possible nominees that I could collect, anyone missing? (I put in likehood of a nom, btw)

For a season I thought wouldn't shape to much musicals wise I finally started to realize how competitive it is going to be. Especially in the best actress in lead/feature in musicalThese are kinda my base predictions. I know we are still far out but it is the too early tony predictions, and I am missing quite a few and I have a lot which are iffy but I'd be curious to hear if people agree/disagree with this. People who I believe might win are italicized. (I don't follow plays as much so this is about musicals sorry)

Best Musical: HadestownTootsie, The Cher Show, The Prom, (Be More Chill or Beetlejuice if they get their act together )

Best Actor in an Leading Role (Musical): Santino Fontana(Tootsie), Derrick Baskin (Ain't Too Proud), Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice if they improve his role) ,George Salazar (might be featured if not Will Roland) (Be More Chill), Andy Karl (Pretty Women) (iffy)

Best Actress in an Leading Role (Musical): Stephanie J Block (Cher Show), Eva Noblezada (Hadestown), Kelli O'Hara(Kiss me Kate), Sophia Ann Caruso (Beetlejuice), Caitlin Kinnunen (The Prom), (If there's a tie I could see Samantha Barks getting in)

Best Actor in an Featured Role (Musical): Patrick Page (Hadestown), Jarrod Spector(Cher Show), One of the Tootsie guys (Either John Behlmann, Andy Grotelueschen ; I expect at least one), Ephraihm Skyles (Ain't Too Proud) Maybe a BMC guy(Jason Tam or Gerard Canonico but it will be George Salazar if he is  featured ) or a guy from The Prom)

Best Actress in an Featured Role (Musical) Amber Gray (Hadestown), Beth Level(Prom), Sarah Stiles (Tootsie), Micaela Diamond(The Cher Show), Stephanie Styles(Kiss Me Kate) / (honestly don't know the last potential person)

I'm surprised to see people predicting Beth Leavel for featured. To me, she and Ashmaskas were very much the two leads. Sure, they both disappear for portions of the show, but that's to be expected in a show with multiple plot-lines. Ultimately, it's their journey we're really following.

If Beetlejuice is at least decent, Kritzer HAS to get in.

John Behlmann is the definition of scene stealer in Tootsie, also rooting for him.

It feels to me like we’re warching Caitlin’s journey. She’s the anchor for the whole thing and the story doesn’t function without her. I feel like we’re always following her.

I definitely think it's Emma's/Caitlin's story, and she should certainly be considered as lead. (And I hope she gets in - I though it was a fantastic and nuanced performance, especially when surrounded by all of the other scenery-chewing characters.) I could see an argument either way for Leavel and Ashmanskas - I think it'll come down to category math and which the producers think has the best chance of getting both of them a nomination. Everyone else is clearly a Featured Actor/Actress. It'll be interesting to see which way they petition!

I’m not surprised to hear people say that, because, in fact, part of the reason I disliked the show is that it lost focus as it went along. It starts as a story about these Broadway actors, and it morphs drastically and ungracefully into a story about Emma. So I get where you’re coming from in calling Emma the lead.

But for me, Emma is kind of like a MacGuffin. Not exactly, because the audience IS supposed to care about her as a human being. But she’s reminiscent of a MacGuffin in that she moves the plot forward, but we see her through the lens of Dee Dee and Barry. Emma’s plot is set up as a device to spur Barry and Dee Dee’s redemption arc. Now like I said, I get that she becomes a more central character as the show goes along, but I think the way a show begins is more telling than how it ends when it comes to determining who is more of a leading character (there are exceptions, of course, but I don’t think this is one of them).

Also, on a more superficial level, I think it’s worth mentioning that the marketing of the show centers much more on the 4 Broadway actors than it does on Emma, both in terms of how the plot is summarized in promotional materials, and in how they advertise Leavel & Ashmanksas as the stars of the show (as well as Sieber, though I think we can all agree he’s more featured than Leavel and Ashmanskas)
