Hello, Broadway World!

A local theatre in my area will be performing one of my favorite musicals, Shrek the Musical. I am super interested in performing the role of Shrek, but I am only 18 years old.  However, I am very "hefty" and have years of experience in working both community and professional non-equity. I have seen the musical many times, and I was also in a production of the show in another state. This is one of the first times that the musical has performed in this area, and it is going to be a BIG deal. - There has already been a news report about it. - I feel like I can do the role since I have been cast in many adult roles before. Also, this is the TYA 2-act version. - (A person in their mid-20's has been pre-cast as Donkey, but no other roles have been pre-cast. They specified that they were looking for ages 10 to adult for all roles.) The only thing that lowers my self-confidence about the ability to do this role is my height. Is that something to worry about, or should I just go into the audition attacking it like I am 6 feet tall?

Does anyone have any good suggestions for audition songs? I have worked with this company before, and in the past, they haven't had a preference of singing songs from the show as an audition piece. If I do a song from the show, it will be "Big Bright Beautiful World," "Who I'd Be," or "When Words Fail." Auditions will take place in the morning, and callbacks will be that evening.

Does anyone have any thoughts on songs if I decide not to perform one from the show?

Thanks so much!

I love Shrek the Musical!!!!! It's one of my favorites as well!

I'd say honestly, attack it like you're 6 feet tall if you really want this role. The worst that could happen is they say no. But do your best so you don't keep looking back and asking yourself "what if?"

As for song, I'm not the expert on that. I'm a female so I don't know as many male audition songsXD If you want Big and burly characters like Shrek, maybe look at songs by the character Eddie in The Wild Party (both Lippa's version and LaChiusa's version). Wild Party songs are typically not overdone, at least where I'm from.

Hope this helps!
