I am shamelessly loving the snark. "By that rationale the Phantom is also the father of Chopin, Gershwin, and Stevie Wonder."
Nice.
The whole show reads like a confession from Lord Lloyd Webber: "My original conception was wrong and I never understood 'Phantom'. The success was thanks to the supreme showman, Hal Prince".
If you've ever heard ALW's campy first try-out of 'Phantom' you'll know how immature and off-track he was. 'Love never Dies' lacked prince to redeem it. As a result it's just as bad as ALW left to his own devices can be.
I thought the Rape like was very unfortunate as it is mentioned in a song that it was quite consensual, unlikely IMHO but consensual.
"And are we just going to blow past the fact that the kid is basically a product of rape?"
Sounds like the product of a closed mind that wasn't even paying attention. The original story was gothic melodrama and so is the sequel, but there is no allusion to rape of any kind in the show. Following that with, "The continued story doesn't revisit old friends, it pees on them and in the most predictable and boring way" just sounds cheap without making any point, so if that's how you feel about the show, then why do the same? That's one of the most immature and unenlighetning reviews I've ever read.
I'm not a fan of the book for Love Never Dies, but I do think the score has some really nice music with a couple of clunkers that should be cut or replaced.
Bitchy, butt ackerate.
I did like the title song. That's it.
Seen in San Jose, California. Unfortunately, I knew the way to San Jose.
