I’m enjoying the music I am thinking of seeing the show. There are some pretty good discounts and seat selection. The show seems fun but to what degree is this a kids show? Is there enough here for an adult to enjoy without kids.

I won the lottery and went alone, I really enjoyed myself. Definitely give it a shot, it's really cute.

SpongeBob can most definitely be enjoyed by adults who are not bringing children. The production is just joyous.

Thanks guys. I just read the nyt review. He does a good job of speaking to who might enjoy it. Even though if don’t fit the demographics (and neither did he) I think I’ll give it a go.

i had a wonderful time at SpongeBob! I went with an adult friend on a Saturday night. Neither of us had seen the cartoon it's based on. None of that mattered. The infectious pop tunes, unabashedly joyous performances of the cast, energetic choreography, and the wildly inventive designs and staging made it a delight. It's really creative collaboration at its best. I already told my best friend I'm taking his his son to see it whenever the inevitable tour rolls into Boston. I try to see nearly everything that opens on Broadway and this was one of the highlights for the current season.

I'm 51 and loved it, as did my 19 year old. I am not a fan of the cartoon, but would love to see this show again.

I can't say this enough; Yes! Yes! Yes! Go see SpongeBob!!

You do not have to know the cartoon!

You do not have to be under 12 years old!

The biggest obstacle some people have is just saying "I'm going to... or I want to see...SpongeBob on Broadway"

Disney can take a lesson from Nickelodeon about creative, production, design, tone and casting from this, their first Broadway production, (...as if Disney wants to take a lesson from anyone).

Now is it "Company" or "Les Miserables"? Hell no, but I think one will totally enjoy the theme, music, ingenious set design and costumes, and of course, the cast! If Ethan Slater does not win you over in the first five minutes then go back outside and find a heart somewhere. I saw the this season's "Carousel" revival, a show with a sumptuous score, and limitless possibilities with the cast, choreography, set design and more and I felt beaten to death by the production, Jesse's "mealy-mouth" and Joshua's "Death-Wish" direction and the pointless "You'll Love This Ballet" attitude. If it wasn't for Lindsay Mendez I would have left.

I had to run to SpongeBob again to feel better! In Squidward Q's words "SpongeBob is Not Not Not NOT NOT NOT a Loser!!"

I Can Has Cheezburger With This?

I'm 30 and got a ticket to see it myself at the end of the month. I say do it the only thing you'll have to lose is money!

I was really harsh about this show at first, but I returned this weekend and I had so much fun. Tina Landau really has created a wonderfully absurd world and has somehow managed (with the help of the totally phenomenal cast) to turn 2D cartoons into some truly human and 3D characters. I also enjoyed the political satire that had been worked in. Also, Gavin Lee is absolutely incredible and oddly heartbreaking as Squidward and Ethan Slater is a wonderful leading man. I will say though that I went with my grandson and he was able to kind of translate some of the references that I hadn't picked up on. You might want to do a bit of homework before you go.

Absolutely! Go see it!!

I was not too comfortable saying "I am going to see SpongeBob!" before seeing it, but ended up wanting to recommend it to everyone! I didn't grow up watching SpongeBob. I didn't bring kids to the show. It did not matter. I was totally into it by the end of the opening number. It's cute and spectacular!

Wow. You guys know how to sell a show. I’m headed to nyc with 10 other gay guys. Sounds like a fun time to me.
And re comparison to carousel. Reminds me of my last trip. I’m trying to be a little more “highbrow” and get something more from my Theatre experiences. I had seen two heavy plays. Yes, important but heavy. Including a 4 hour show. It was great but I was exhausted. And actually decided to change course for the trip and not see anything else for the last two days. I came close to getting tickets to spongebob, thinking that’s what I needed. I didn’t. Sounds like It would have been a great pick-me-up.

It really frustrates me that so many people have written this off as merely a kids show

IMHO I see Queenie as being more of a brunette...

And yet, how is one to know that it is more than a kids show?

By not automatically meeting it with a dismissive attitude?

I am in my 40's and thoroughly enjoyed it. The key is to go in knowing that it's the Spongebob musical, and not anything on a super deep level. I went in expecting to just have fun, which I did, but then I was also pleasantly surprised at some of the other messages in the show. I smiled a lot and there are also a lot of catchy tunes. Very fun night at the theatre.

Wow.  Attitude much?   Your response doesn’t answer the question.    I think adults can be forgiven for concluding that this is a kids show.   A kids show that is evidently entertaining for adults as well.

Read the reviews? Do a minimal amount of research on its creation/creative team?

That is what he was doing by starting the thread and asking people's opinions and now he's getting attacked for it.

We saw it with no kids (the kids in the audience behaved better than the adults).  I wanted to see it after all the glowing reviews here.  It is interesting.  It's very upbeat and colorful.  I didn't think it was a particular good show though.  The cast works their butts off and the direction/choreography of the show is very creative.  I would only recommend seeing it if you can get discounted tickets.  It is not worth paying full price to see this. It's a step above a theme park show, however, I did find it more entertaining than Aladdin.

I saw Spongebob by myself after winning a lottery ticket over the weekend, and was pleasantly surprised! I never saw Spongebob when I was a child and was worried that I would find the show too childish, but it ended up being upbeat, colorful and really really fun! The kids around me were talking a lot during the show, but other than that, I had a great time. Give it a try if you can!
