I also did a late show and had no issues getting home (not being local I had no idea the L shuts down early, which was a fun surprise). Took a lyft back to Manhattan; the street it is on was very quiet and I had no issue waiting outside.
The show itself is incredible and I cannot recommend it enough.

The L train doesn’t shut down early, t may be reduced service after midnight which means waiting a bit more, but it still runs... I took it back when I saw it...
When I said about the L train shut down I was referring to the planned work that’s schedule to take place, meaning the L won’t do Manhattan/Brooklyn for a full year, which is supposed to happen sometime next year...
edit: actually the L train has been having issues ever since Sandy, so it’s possible that they weren’t working on some nights. There’s actually a website called IsTheLRunning.com that allows you to check service.

I live off the same subway stop. It's totally fine. I commute to midtown at all times of day and night. To Times Square it's 40 minutes, tops. And that's with slow trains. The L is sometimes rerouted late at night but there are well-marked shuttle buses and big signs if it is and there are Uber's and Lyfts and you can even probably get a cab on Grand Street if you'd rather not deal. There's restaurants and delis open all night. I've lived here 12 years and I love it and it's only gotten nicer the whole time.
The L will not run between Brooklyn and Manhattan at all for about 15 months between May of 2019 and August of 2020 to repair damage from Hurricane Sandy - Bedford Ave in Brooklyn will be the last stop and there will be no L in Manhattan along 14th Street. It's going to be a mess but it's totally necessary. People will reroute to the G or the M or bike or take shuttles or move. But it's home for me so I'll deal.
