I actually agree with all of these, except for Best Book of a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical (both of which I believe will go to The Band’s Visit).

I’m also still hoping that Harry Hadden-Patonpulls through for a Best Actor win, but it’s looking more and morelike Ethan Slater’s these days.

yes to all of these... except scenic design of a musical. i feel like OOTI has that one on lock?

I wouldn't call that one a lock. I think OOTI, SpongeBob, and My Fair Lady all have a solid shot at set design. All three knocked it out of the park.

I’ve been having a feeling since Once on This Island opened that it’s going to win Best Revival. The NY Times Survey coming out and revealing how close it is pretty much makes me think OoTI will take it. It’s being championed as the little show that could even though it’s a commercial show and My Fair Lady is being done by Lincoln Center, which is a non-profit, though a powerful one. I think although both have similarly rave reviews, a lot of MFL’s reviews kept comparing it to Sher’s other revivals (not against other shows this season which means it’s held to a different standard). I also think what Sher and Lincoln Center has done at the Vivian Beaumont is being taken for granted and people just expect greatness from them, which hurts it when it comes to the “wow” and surprise factor, which I think is Once on This Island’s secret weapon.

Plus, MFL is considered one of the greatest written musicals ever and people have much higher expectations and preconceived ideas about how it should be done and not everybody agrees with the direction in tone that this production took. Meanwhile, Once on This Island wasn’t considered a classic of musical theatre but was a sleeper fan fave for two decades and this production took everybody by surprise in its conception and what it had to do for the Circle in the Square stage. People had lower expectations for this production going in and this amazing production was able to really amaze people not knowing what to expect.

I also think Once on this Island fits in more with what modern Broadway audiences want while many theater goers these days aren’t used to a show that is totally and unapologetically George Bernard Shaw and Lerner/Loewe. Once on this Island is an emotional show full of riffing and emotional songs performed with bombast and belting.

That’s why I think Once on This Island is actually the favorite for Best Revival.

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned before, but MFL vs. OoTI is feeling very similar to She Loves Me Vs. Color Purple. A classic, well done revival of a great musical vs. shows that as scotty mentioned are lesser known that focus on elevating the existing material (which OoTI certainly does). However the tony poll from that year had Color Purple as a big favorite.

I can't help but wonder why there's so much love for Spongebob and Mean Girls, yet so much hatred for Frozen when all are based on movies/tv. How can Frozen win Oscars, Golden Globes, and Grammys and get a total Tony snub as so many are predicting? That makes zero sense to me. They deserve best score and book, and they have a freaking shelf full of awards to prove it. Take Disney out of the equation and they walk out with both awards. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Tina Fey and want that show to do well, but there is no way Mean Girls or Spongebob are better than Frozen when you look at the stories. Do either really have a better score than Frozen if everyone ditches their Disney biases? I haven't seen TBV yet so I can't speak to that one, maybe it really is better. But again, we are talking about some major accolades backing up Frozen's merit. Sure they already had some songs done because of the movie, but these are the same people. It's their original work, it's not like new people came in and built off someone else's work years after the movie happened. If Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez don't win score something is seriously wrong in my opinion.

Great Dame, we get it, you love Frozen. Unfortunately, many people don't agree that it did anything better than the movie and it needs to be judged on its own. Take away your own bias about the movie and does the show, BY ITSELF, hold up really well? My vote is no, it doesn't. Therefore, it doesn't deserve accolades.

Also, yes, TBV is actually better music.

Mainly because Frozen-mania has died down from five years ago and people are looking at the product more objectively and realize how mediocre and only ok it really is. Frozen mainly won awards against other animated films and for the song "Let it Go". Transferring an animated film (or any film) to the stage will turn out to be a different product from the film. This was a very lazy and cheap looking stage adaptation that resulted in an inferior product to the already average and overrated film.

Another point regarding the awards you cited it won, the film isn't that good compared to Disney's classics much less animated films as a whole. The Wind Rises is not my favorite Miyazaki film or Studio Ghibli film in general, but that was the movie most of the hardcore animated film fans thought was the superior Best Animated Feature nominee (that or Ernest & Celestine) that year and won more actual critics' awards but it couldn't beat Frozen-mania at the time and was at a disadvantaged for being a Japanese film going against the Disney machine in Hollywood industry awards

Well I'll definitely check that film out as it must be good! I'm not a Disney nut, there are plenty on here but I really am not. I just think Frozen itself is an excellent story. I totally admit TBV could justifiably be better... but Mean Girls and Spongebob are not better in my opinion. I also think Frozen the Musical is really good on its own. It has everything the movie had, and I personally loved much of the new material. If TBV sweeps them I won't complain, but I'm standing by my statement that the other two are not better. Can you tell I'm getting my whining out today so I don't do it tomorrow? I don't want to crap on anyone's parade tomorrow, but I do think there's been a pretty big snub for Frozen this year. Mean Girls got a nomination over Frozen on costumes? I don't get that at all. I sound like I hate Mean Girls, I really don't haha! I just think the standard for Disney tends to be way higher than others.

I do agree that I don't think Frozen truly is any worse than Mean Girls. Mean Girls just has Tina Fey in its corner to provide the snark and jokes people mistake for good storylines and character arcs.

I can’t say I loved the Frozen musical, but I do agree that it should’ve been nominated for costumes, and also for lighting. I was very surprised that it was left out of both of those categories.

I also really loved Mean Girls... clearly in the minority on these boards! Though I’m still 100% Team Band’s Visit in the new musicals. That score is stunning. (Team OOTI overall, for what it’s worth.)

I wonder why such hate for Once on this Island? I felt like they underperformed nomination day and I get the impression they will tomorrow too. It's a shame considering the fact that I thought it was a truly mesmerizing production. If it is shut out, I suspect we'll get a closing notice VERY soon.

^Sadly, that's probably true. I agree with your opinion, I loved the production so much, but I'm not sure about its ability to hold up against the power of Lincoln Center and I don't think it can compete on a technical level with something like Spongebob (including Best Director).
