Nathan Lane should come away with supporting, right?

Does anyone think someone else could take the category?

Add me to the chorus who are disappointed about McArdle. He brought so much to that role. It was definitely the best performance in that piece.

So do we think this is going to be like last season where despite having less nominations The Band’s Visit is still considered a lock for Best Musical, or do we think with the proper campaigning Spongebob or Mean Girls could actually pull an upset?
As if there was one new musical that could argue for the bandwagon effect it coul, and I cannot believe i am saying this, be Spongebob which should be competitive in the all of the technical catagories. Add to that the case should and will likely be made that Ms Landau has brought the impossible to life on stage, with a creative vision that can really only be compared to Julie Taymor’s vision for The Lion King.

Agreed. When I saw it right after opening he looked completely disegaged when he wasn't the focus.

For those who are perplexed by the off-kilter nods for Leading Actor - Musical, they've had other lean years before. The last I can remember is the 2011 Tony Awards when the lean category was Leading Actress - Musical, where there were only 6 possible nominees, and the two leads that were shut out that year were Sherie Rene Scott for WOMEN ON THE VERGE and Janet Dacal for WONDERLAND.

The last time any acting category had 6 nominees was 2015, with Featured Actor - Play

I think THE BAND'S VISIT will still take Best Musical, Score, and Actress. Fey will probably take book.

Me neither. He’s an OK actor. His voice is strong, but he sings one song and not nearly as well as Kecia Lewis did IMHO. The rest of the time he fades into the background. It’s not a very challenging role to play.
"

I wasn't overly impressed, either. No vocal histrionics at the show I saw. Certainly nothing to support the previously reported mid-show standing ovations, etc.  And, frankly, when the audience responded with a nice hand, he looked visibly irked at the response. Good, not great IMO.  And certainly not as good as Philip Boykin, for that matter. Now he (and Kenita) deserved Tony love.

No. At least I would hope not. I saw 6 shows in November. I saw The Band’s Visit on a Saturday matinee and Come From Away that evening. TBV was at the top of my favorite shows (along with Hello, Dolly!) from that trip and CFA was firmly at the bottom.

That's a tough one. I love them both. But, CFA might have beat TBV. BTW,  I am team TBV for musical this year.

My brief response to all of this:

Schumer and Cera were nominated because they need TV/film people nominated so non-theatre people might actually watch the awards.

Are we sure we aren’t upset about Alex Newell not getting nominated because of the quality of his performance, or more because we really like him as an actor/personality/groundbreaker?

Having six actress in a musical nominees when only nine were eligible is ridiculous. There should never be more people nominated than not nominated, otherwise not getting a nomination is more if an insult than getting one is an honor. We should just go back to four nominees in all acting categories.

The bands visit has poorly focused direction, is very slow paced, has no real resolution besides the dude picking up the phone, but that was in no way triggered by the events of the play, it just happened. It was an okay show in an average season, Come From Away is an amazing show, they are just compared because they are one-acts, and the bands visit fails where come from away succeeds, Come From Away leaves the audience moved and in tears, while the bands' visit has no real conflict and resolution. Over a year after opening, Come From Away is still at over 100% capacity, while as you could see, the band's visit is not. Look at stubhub, you can get tickets for below face value, that is clearly a negative indicator. Overall, most people agree, Come From Away is a superior show. Maybe you didn't like it, but that doesn't make that opinion right, as the majority of theatergoers clearly prefer come from away based on how they are filling that theater alone.

People complaining about McPhee, if you hear their asides, she was having trouble because the TelePrompTer wrote out the names phonetically and it was harder to read that than the actual names. I’m more offended that they’re saying Hammerstein’s name incorrectly.

I’m thrilled for John Leguizamo and Latin History for Morons.

No. The Band's Visit is far and away the frontrunner for Best Musical.

I think Band’s Visit has it in the bag...but is there a world where we think Fey might snag best book for Mean Girls? It has pretty much always been pointed out as the strongest part of the show. Still think it’ll go to Band’s Visit, but it wouldn’t shock me.

I'm excited for all these nominees! Can't wait to see the show. I wonder if Margaritaville will still do a performance despite being completely shut out? Maybe they'll still buy a slot just to hopefully pump up summer tourist numbers?

Also I don't necessarily know if The Band's Visit is as sure of a lock as people thing - if The Lion King can beat Ragtime for Best Musical, Spongebob can beat The Band's Visit, is my view.

I’ve been saying this. The Band’s Visit is deservedly the front runner for Best Book, but with Mean Girls having no shot at any other awards really, I could see them taking this one, especially since there’s so much love for Tina in the community.

Um wait, why are we comparing The Band's Visit and Come From Away? I still totally think that the latter should've won the Tony last year, but for what reason are we putting these two beautiful shows in contention against each other right now?

Oh how I wish Anthony Boyle could pull an upset and win, but even I know how highly unlikely that is so I think it’s safe to say Lane has got this in the bag.

True. The only possible other award I could see going to Mean Girls would *maybe* be Ashley Park. This is partly because in one season, she’s created such buzz from K-Pop to this. I know she’s being adjudicated on her performance in Mean Girls, but I could see the incredible enthusiasm for K-Pop subconsciously bleeding over into many of the nominators’ minds. Would give the edge to Lindsay Mendez, but that category is really a toss up.

Mean Girls did not get good reviews.  They were overall mixed at best.  In fact, if you lined up their reviews next to Frozen the number of negative, mixed and positive were probably pretty close to the same.

I think the major difference is that Mean Girls has enjoyed a whiff of positivity given the love for Tina Fey and the fact that they've been just packing the crowds in.  Being the hot new product can diffuse a lot - including mixed reviews.  Still, I'm somewhat shocked that a musical that got such mixed reviews is leading the nominations tally.
