Advice on taking a teen to Fun Home#1

I'm taking my niece and her 14 year old son to Fun Home tonight in Miami.  He is very involved in theater at school.  Neither of them know what I'm taking them to.  We are having dinner before, would you tell them about the show, how much if any, or not at all.

Do they WANT to know?  That is the bigger question. Do you have any concerns that your niece will object to the show?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Thanks Drama, she will not mind.  I guess you're saying ask them if they want to know before saying anything.  I was thinking about mentioning the show is a little deep.  It deals with a dysfunctional family and coming to grips with who you are.  I was also thinking of telling them the years it was set.  My niece will appreciate the pop song twist and will immediately recognize when she's in the 70's.  I was thinking of mentioning to the kid that when the father grew up in the 50's people felt more compelled to hide their identity than they do today.  Any feedback is welcome, thanks again.

I wouldn't offer all that unless they want to know,  they'll understand it all as they watch.  And if they don't, they'll ask questions afterwards.

If they want to know, I'd only say its about family dynamics and coming to terms with one's sexualty.

Never could I ask for a better source of advice.  Thanks.
