Broadway Debut on first preview vs. opening night

If someone is making their Broadway Debut in a new show, is the first preview date considered the date of their debut? Or would it be opening night?

The moment the curtain goes up and they step on the stage at their first performance. That’s their Broadway debut. Even if the show shuts down forever after that performance, they still made their Broadway debut.

I've wondered this too. Because when you see video clips of the cast during robe ceremonies and other opening night stuff, they usually have a part where they recognize everyone who is making their Broadway debut that night. I always thought it was weird when they had already been in previews for 3-4 weeks. 

Also, when you look up productions on IBDB, it just lists the "Opening Night credits"

If the show closed in previews, they still would have made their premiere. The date itself doesn't really matter, except, perhaps to the person himself.
