Talk about a polarizing revival so far. Some positive, some mixed, some negative.

These reviews definitely show how this production is an acquired taste. Not a unanimous say by any means. I find it pretty fascinating seeing how so many people have different opinions on the singing. Saying that Mendez and Mueller are straining is so odd. They have always been in excellent voice when I’ve seen them perform over time. In fact, in my opinion the biggest reason to see this show is for the vocal performances. Maybe it was an off night..?

NJ.com seems mixed-to-negative calling it a "handsome but fundamentally inert production".

Definitely.  They are either loving or absolutely hating it.  I haven't read such mixed reviews on a production in I don't know how long.

Lindsay is a goddess said: "Moment of truth, people. Time to see if the early negative feedback was justified or not."

The early negative feedback on this board was shameful, to say the least. I mean, people actually commenting and judging a show they have not even seen yet. And even those who have seen it were extra harsh on it for no reason. I saw it about 3 weeks ago and thought it was magnificent from start to finish. You get an evening of your money's worth without question

It's very annoying reading about the MeToo movement regarding this, or any Broadway production.  They were not going to change huge sections of the musical to fit into 2018.  It's stupid and a ridiculous suggestion.  I fully support TimesUp and MeToo but not when it comes to art from 1909.  Oh, and I really hope the final Playbill is NOT Joshua Henry looking all pissed.  I hope it's the lovely blue and white art they have put on their merchandise.

That would be very hard to prove.

Exactly. All the usual suspects raced to early previews with their knives out and eviscerated it, as is the case for sooooo many shows on here, and then of course, people believed them and started crying about tickets already bought and pondering selling them, etc, etc. These reviews are clearly mixed, but this is far from the disaster that the evil Broadway Bitches were praying for. This production has pull quotes galore so far, and will have more once all reviews are in.

I would automatically ignore anything from someone who calls one of the greatest musicals of all time a total disaster. A.m. New York always gives pathetic stupid short reviews. How anyone can say that a really good production of Carousel is a disaster is insane. I had the best time when I saw it by myself. I had 4th row center so that helped. But I plan to go again.

I think the reviews pretty much reflect the sentiments posted on this board from the beginning. Very mixed and people were very passionate about what they thought.   I saw the show about 3 weeks ago and was blown away by Joshua Henry’s performance.  I did think the dance numbers were a bit too long but the performances and that glorious orchestra more than made up for its shortcomings.  I think some of the criticism is valid but to say it’s a total disaster is unfair to say the least.  AM N.Y?  Seriously?

The only review of a show that matters is your own.

Lots of people, myself included, went into this production with high hopes, and left sorely disappointed. People have had perfectly valid reason for not liking this production. So stop being so biased and dismissive.

I haven't seen the show but it's Jesse Mueller and Renee Fleming singing! What's there to be disappointed in?!

Or maybe, and this might be a bit crazy, they don’t share the exact same opinion as you about this production.

Alexander Gemignani gave one of the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard. His Mr. Snow was perfection. His voice alone is worth the price of admission. He could get a supporting actor nomination, not that it matters. To me, he was the absolute vocal stand out in the whole show. I couldn't believe what I was hearing actually. He's probably the best high baritone in the music theater scene today. At least the best I've ever heard.

Juggalo, I enjoyed the show, as well, and I agree with a lot of the things you've said about it, but, honestly, repeatedly hitting someone over the head with a great review can be just as annoying as someone doing it with a bad one.

I was incredibly excited to see this show when I visit NYC in September.. but these photos, I feel, make the show look terrible and cheap.
"

What's wrong with those photos??? You think they make the show look "terrible and cheap?" I can't even comment on that. They are gorgeous photos showing a bit of that beautiful set and the wonderful costumes. What on Earth are you people expecting? And you can't always go by photos. That set with the waves and the horizon and the sunset was so great. The waves were shimmering and the sky was glittering. The word cheap would never come to mind of anyone seeing that.

Funny, I felt exactly the opposite. Astonishingly choreographed buy a brilliant renowned choreographer. Luxurious looking. I never wanted it to end. And I found the set and choreography inspired. The prologue was so inventive and breathtaking. The way they set the carousel up. Using their bodies to imitate the horses. What more do you want?

I'm literally shocked. This is literally one of the most mediocre revivals I've ever seen on Broadway. But, glad it's making some people happy (?)
