Patti LuPone Speaks Her Mind |
Kind of rude to single out a specfic actress (especially one who has taken a lot of grief over the Weinstein stuff recently), but whatever.

As Mama M said, courtesy of Kander and Ebb, whatever happened to class?
That's just amazingly sad.
No one imagined that ALW and Patti LuPone would start vacationing again or anything like that. But after she also benefited from tons of press over the "alleged" reconciliation, to pour cold water all over that isn't "honest" - it's pathetic.
Now I really hope ALW writes Volume II of "Unmasked"
The woman is a legend, no doubt. But at what point do you finally say "shut up?" Patti has had a long, celebrated career; one that many can only dream of. Nothing has ever been enough for her. She has every right to speak her mind, but over the last few years, these statements have become more and more vitriolic.
For those who love Patti. I was just on groupon looking at deals for my upcoming trip. I saw that Patti was performing at the Bergen in Jersey on April 14. You can get a balcony seat for $24 with their extra 20% off sale. I think the extra 20% off ends tonight, so don't wait.
As she ages, she just gets more and more crabby. I've never been a LuPone fan, as she has no care for fans of hers. Saying her fans stand because they spent money? THEY spent money to see YOU. She just seems bitter and sad at this point. Glad she's retired. Over the headlines of her being nasty. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why she was fired by ALW.

Given some of the comments on here, I was expecting to see that she said some really, intensely nasty stuff.
But like... as adamgreer said, nothing she said is wrong? She's completely correct in that celebrity status on Broadway has become a norm for mediocrity, and standing ovations are essentially meaningless these days. And her relationship with ALW is hers to talk about however frankly she'd like.
Love her.

Exactly!
As soon as the haters see "Patti Lupone" in the subject line they always feel the need to bash.
Her comment about ALW was fine too. She didn't call him an alcoholic this time, at least.
Did she say anything "Wrong?" Not necessarily, but my god she loves to complain about things. "Not in my country they can't." Seriously? There are many Hollywood actors that do just fine on the stage and eventually make it their second home. What gives her the right to bash them if they want to try a new medium. Uma may not have been great but she gave it a shot, so I can't fault her for that. In the same vein, Hollywood can be like, "You Broadway people have no right to be on the big screen, so stay in your space" which, of course, she would complain about that too if happened.
And the whole "Sunset Blvd" situation................LuPone was the not the first person fired from a show and she won't be the last. She makes it sound like it ONLY happened to her. And who cares if people want to give standing ovations? You have every right not to stand as they do to give that ovation.

I'm not quite "getting' her position of opposing movie actors on the stage. Does she mean she she prefers that television actors be relegated to television, movie actors be relegated to movies and stage actors be relegated to the stage? Because of that's the case maybe she should consider relegating herself to the stage and never accept another television or movie gig.
Her "logic" is unrealistic and unreasonable.

Her point is not a controversial one. People don't want to see actors on stage that are only good at film acting and not stage acting. The example of Julia Roberts was mentioned above. Obviously, there are many like Jackman and Denzel who are great at both. Patti herself is great at both, IMO.

That. For someone my child self (and I'd imagine a lot of my contemporaries) first met as "Corky's mom from "Life Goes On,"" her film actor vs. stage actor animosity seems...odd.

I am not a particular fan of Patti LuPone, but this I like.
WARNING: Naughty words ahead.

Ha! I was about to say that Life Goes On was the first time I watched her too.
Maybe some of the posters are missing the fact that she complains because THESE PROBLEMS ACTUALLY EXIST. Being nice or silent solves NOTHING.

I would love to hear how you reached your conclusion that "she makes it sound like it ONLY happened to her" from the only passage in the article relevant to her firing:
"He fired me. He didn't tell me anything. I found out through my agent on performance night at my dressing table," LuPone explained. "It was in a newspaper in New York that I found out, not from Andrew."
