Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/8/18 |
Here she is worlddddd!
Here’s Bernadette.
Outstanding for Frozen. Last week was understandably huge with Easter/Spring Break, but this week is even better, with a higher average ticket price. I'm sure positive WOM is helping this show.
And KINKY BOOTS with another week of $1 million+. Brady and Co. must really be helping the show now. Wonder what kind of name might be joining the show for the summer?

Frozen killing it. 4th highest grossing behind Hamilton and two veterans Wicked and Lion King.

Broke the house record at the St James for the second week in a row...

Highest-grossing play in Broadway history? That doesn't sound right after less than a month of performances. Do you mean that it's hit the highest weekly gross for a play in Broadway history?
Looks like every show, including the lowest-grossing ones, had pretty good attendance this week. I know that doesn't really mean anything if many of them are comped/discounted and if the show isn't making their nut. But regardless, it's good to see that so many people are going to the theatre!
This week was also Spring Break; the hordes of badly-behaved teens were unusually thick and vexing this year.
Great number for THREE TALL WOMEN!

I don't mean this as a dig towards Frozen at all. I love the movie but haven't seen the show yet. But I've noticed A LOT of tickets on StubHub and when you look on the day of the show, many of the seats are selling for below face value (I've occasionally seen prices as low as $40-50 when I haven't seen any regular seats on Ticketmaster for less than $99). So I wonder if there's any chance this might be a case of scalpers being overly confident in a show and ending up losing money (to the advantage of the show itself).
To prove I'm not digging at a show I haven't seen, I've also noticed similar things happening with The Band's Visit, my favorite show of the year, where sometimes on show days, there are tickets as low as $20 on StubHub. Again, could scalpers have bought big based on the rave reviews and ended up taking a bath on it? I don't actually know! It's just something I've been wondering about as I've browsed StubHub over the past week or two.

Deservedly so IMHO.

Not really. Most scalpers aren't selling a few seats, so for all the seats they make a profit on, a few end up going for less, mainly because they didn't reduce the prices early enough. Most professional scalpers will come out ahead overall, even when a handful of seats go for less... but it doesn't affect the show either way, the seat sold to a scalper, so the show already made its money.

And anyway, the show was above capacity for the week... so it’s clearly using standing room. Demands high. The question is what legs does it have?

Was the opening night of Mean Girls reflected in this, as far as comps, press, etc? Because if so, even that one performance surely comped heavily, is that not an impressive number and capacity?

The scalper(or whomever is trying to resell the ticket) already bought the ticket at full price so that won't affect anything if it's not resold.

Totally! I guess I just wonder if the WOM isn’t as strong as it might be and we could potentially see scalpers backing off and demand dying down a little. Obviously, I don’t think the show is in any trouble whatsoever. But given Disney’s demand pricing I wonder if it’s possible the show could start to fall off a bit as what seems to be middling word of mouth spreads. Then again, it’s oretty much guaranteed a bunch of Tony nods given the lack of competition this year, so maybe it will be in even better shape! I’m just glancing st the tea leaves trying to figure out if there’s a message in it.

If it's not resold it would affect the attendance numbers since that number reflects the tickets that are actually scanned at the door.

I never knew that! Do they still count what they sold the ticket for in their grosses if there are no-shows?

To know that, you would need to know how far out the scalpers have bought into the show, though. And even so, if you buy 10 $150 seats, and sell 8 for $250 and have to let two go at the last minute for $75, you're still making money overall.
I can attest to The Band's Visit stubhub madness, I got a ticket for $45 center orchestra row G. And there were rear mezz going for $20ish.

I'm thrilled to see it doing well so far! I realize it's early, but so many people love this story and the expectations are high. I want to see Caissie Levy and Patti Murin crush the world, go Frozen go! It's pretty impressive that it came in behind The Lion King, Hamilton, and fricking Wicked. Not too shabby of a start.

That can’t possibly be true. Every night there are no shows. I worked the week at a show reporting 100% capacity. I can tell you for a fact that 100% of the tickets were sold. I can also tell you every performance had some empty seats.
I have been moonlighting at other shows that are at 100% + and have many friends who work in those houses as regulars. There are ALWAYS some no shows. Some nights it’s just 2 or 4. Some nights it’s 10 or 12. You even occasionally get whole groups that don’t show (usually either because of transportation problems or confusion about the date).
In some houses the House Managers will get a list from the Box Office when they sign off on the day’s wrap of all the tickets that were sold and not scanned. They use this in case they need to relocate people at intermission.
In all of these scenarios the capacity numbers will still show all seats as having been sold.
Springsteen is reporting a capacity of 3,792 out of a possible 3,792 giving it 100%.
I know for a fact that 3,792 tickets weren’t scanned because my sister and her husband got into a (minor) car accident on their way to the show and never used their tickets.
I really think capacity indicates the percentage of total tickets sold not the number of tickets scanned.
