Barely 400 words is not nearly enough to review two long plays. I hope others have more space for their review.

Ben Brantley has already chimed in, and it's a Critics Pick...

Brantley's review has me aching to go back. It's such a glorious work of theater.

Based on these reviews, who in the cast can start clearing a spot on their mantle? Gough? Lane?

Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane.

I think Garfield has Best Actor on lock.

Featured Actress seems like it'll be a showdown between Gough and Laurie Metcalf.

I'd also say Lane is the frontrunner for Featured Actor, but Anthony Boyle is doing some exceptional work over at Harry Potter.

It all depends on category placement. I think Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane both belong in Lead Actor but I could absolutely see a situation where they move Nathan to Featured. If Nathan, Gough, and Garfield are all in lead and the rest in featured, I could realistically see a situation where every principal cast member gets a nomination and Garfield, Susan Brown, and James McArdle walk away with Tony Awards.

But if Gough ends up in Featured, I think she would likely beat Susan Brown. I think their best bet is to try to spread the category placement as much as possible though, putting Gough and Lane in Lead.

We don't even know where Laurie Metcalf will be competing for Three Tall Women yet. Even if she doesn't compete in Featured, we also shouldn't rule out Noma Dumezweni, who did win the Olivier last year for her performance in Harry Potter & the Cursed Child.

In multiple interviews, Nathan has said something along the lines of "oh I'm not the lead, Andrew Garfield is," so I would actually be surprised if he and Andrew were both in Lead Actor. (This could also mean nothing, but Andrew and Nathan are both represented by Creative Artists Agency. Their agents and the producers should want both of them to win Tonys in separate categories.)

Metcalf vs Gough for featured actress?

How about Denzel in Iceman Cometh? That's also a very showy, award-bait role.

As of now, only one actor has been Tony nominated for his performance as Hickey in The Iceman Cometh, and Kevin Spacey ended up losing the award that year to Brian Dennehy in Death of a Salesman.

I couldn't imagine Brown beating Metcalf. Gough, yes. It would just seem so odd to have Brown, great as she is, having a Tony for this over Denise. Also, they have to know Denise has a much better show to win. Her role is beloved, she's coming off an Olivier, lots of press about being one of the next best stage actors.

It would be dumb to put Gough in lead against Jackson, she wont Win.

In featured she would win even against Metcalf, imo. And Brown Will likely Get a nom.

At this point I think Garfield is winning anyway, but Lane will be placed in featured and Win over there. McArdle and Stewart-Jarrett Will be likely nominees too.

I think Lee Pace and Amanda Lawrence Will be the only cast members unnominated.

Great play, some great performances- messy staging and design and a couple of misfiring performances.  The weaknesses are generally being overlooked in the love-in for the text.

I think this staging is fantastic and illuminates some of the relationship dynamics in new and interesting ways. And I love the way the angel is being done. Updated On: 3/26/18 at 07:31 AM
