I live in Seattle, and am constantly baffled by the people who attend shows at our local musical theatre house The 5th Avenue. They subsribe every season, and are offended by everything. Just read a couple posts on their Facebook page. One said they are going to stop subscribing because there was 1 swear word in The Little Mermaid and 3 in Holiday Inn. Another said they were tired of them producing “PC Musicals” about mental illness and gay issues. Whatever that means! Years ago Someone was offended by the dream ballet in Oklahoma!, angry the theater didn’t warn her about it.
I’m just constantly amazed at the things these people freak out over. And that they do zero research before attending. Any fun stories about pearl clutching theatre-goers?

Posted: 3/12/18 at 11:24pmA really old couple in front of me at Mean Girls tonight left halfway through the 2nd act. I had to wonder, why were they even there, no less at the first preview. Not like they could have wandered up to TKTS tonight on a whim, I bought my ticket 6 months ago.

Many years ago the house manager of the Shubert in Los Angeles told me that a couple had sought him out at intermission, and, after identifying him, fell to their knees and prayed for his soul that he would present anything as sinful and morally deficient as A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. Nice to know nothing's changed.

Yikes. Love that they put it all on the house manager.
I was at South Pacific and a woman was ranting about how morally corrupt Spring Awakening was. She said she was happy to be at a wholesome show like South Pacific. Apparently she’s okay with underage girls being forced into prostitution, but not teenagers exploring their sexuality.

This musical would be right at home with among the most super conservative demographic of Western countries today (i.e., the regressive left).

Posted: 3/12/18 at 11:37pmI had an experience with someone at the Dear Evan Hansen stage door where they randomly said how their parents wouldn’t let them see Hamilton, because of what they said to Pence. That’s probably not what your looking for though

Chillax Amanda. One can ponder things without it consuming them and affecting their enjoyment. I think it’s reasonable to wonder why people even bother to see theatre if they’re offended by everything Kind of like how you constantly attend shows that you know you’re going to hate. You’re constantly obsessing over why we love Sondheim.

I don't like fish oil, but it's far easier to swallow than that indigestible opus.

They seemed huffy and left after a song where most of the cast members gave double middle fingers throughout the song, so I ventured it an educated guess.

It is interesting to think about why people go to shows that will offend them, unless they really didn't read about it at all. Haha has anyone ever overheard people who are offended by Book of Mormon? Hopefully conservatives just avoid that one lol.

So the lady angry about the 1 swear word in Little Mermaid responded to me. She told me “There’s no need to drop morals to satisfy current trends. Foul language is foul language no matter what year it is”.

I renember at Finding Neverland, a family asked the house manager at Internission if the second act was going to be as offensive as the first act. I'm not sure what they were told but they left and gathered in circle to pray on the sidewalk before they walked up the street.
I'm still trying to figure out what could possibly have been morally offensive in FN. There was an occasional curse word and gay joke in act 2 but act 1 had nothing

I think part of the magic of theatergoing is not knowing much or anything about the show at all before the curtain's up. I think Tony Kusher wrote something to similar effect in his preface to Angels in America.

Really? Wow! Now if only they could figure out a way to remove the foul taste from that opus you mentioned. Unfortunately, I fear that even a Nobel Prize scientist couldn't figure out how to do that.
