Don't know much about her policies but I'm really excited to see an established artist who has done enough challenging theater to develop empathy for and understanding of people from different backgrounds running for the office.

OR she could keep giving us amazing performances onstage. I'm don't have an issue with her running other than the fact that she would have to take a break from acting.

Enough celebrities running for political office. Usually the only qualification they have for office is a fan base.  No experience in government affairs.  Haven't we learned anything from Ronald Reagan, Arnold S, Gopher and the Orange menance?

I am also over celebrities running for political office, and experience in policymaking suddenly being a bad quality in candidates, HOWEVER, I do think Cynthia Nixon is extremely intelligent and does have a history of being an advocate. Should she decide to enter the primary, I'd be interested to see who she puts on her team and decides to surround herself with. Cuomo has been screwing NYC over, and no Republican will advocate for us should they win the seat in Albany.

May she come to her senses and change her mind.  The "progressive" label is general and misleading, however well intentioned.  And it isn't always well intentioned.  It can be quite exploitative.  The hatchet job continually perpetrated against Cuomo by the self-serving De Blasio can nearly always be countered with an objective look at facts.   Plus, Cynthia has no history in politics.  She has never even held a position in one of the acting unions.  How is she going to deal with the state assembly?

I loved her in A Quiet Passion.  I would love for her to have been nominated for an Oscar.  I would not vote for her in the Democratic primary and I would have a hard time voting for her even if she did score the nomination, which she is not likely to do.  What I can foresee is the Working Families party putting her on the ballot against Cuomo and his Republican challenger.  Who do you think that is going to benefit?

If there's been a hatchet job against Cuomo, it's because he handed people the hatchet and said, "I DARE you."

I imagine that she has as good a chance of getting elected as Rosie O'Donnell. Make of that what you will.

Nixon probably knows she has no chance of winning the Dem primary but is doing this to ensure that Cuomo is confronted with the issue of education and etc. that she cares about and keep pestering him about it.

I hope that Scotty is correct, because that would at least make sense.  Hasn't the idiot in the White House been sufficient proof that someone with no experience in politics has no business running for such a high office the first time at bat, simply because they have no name recognition.

Theoretically, at least, the idiot in the White House ran a large, money making, multi-national business, although the degree and legality of that success is somewhat in question.  Nixon has been memorizing scripts.  If it is true that she has never even run for office in one of the unions to which she belongs, then she is either trying to leverage her name recognition to get some press focused on her issues (which would be a good thing) or is woefully misguided.  I hope the former is the case.

The idea of democracy is that everybody should be able to run, even those who people don't associate with policymaking. Of course, the results of that can vary...to say the least...

I think what made Cheeto and other populist outside-the-box candidates so popular (think Jesse Ventura or even Arnold Schwarzenegger) is because people do like the idea of a "pure-hearted" outsider who hadn't been sullied by the evil and corrupt political culture coming in and shaking up the whole political landscape which people imagine to be full of people who already know each other, went to the same sort of schools, studied the same sort of thing, are from the same untouchable background, and are thus exclusionary and makes the process of policymaking needlessly complicated and difficult to keep others out of it.

That said, when people think that, they don't question whether the people involved are just like that or if you HAVE to be like that in that sort of environment and that's really the most effective way to make policy considering how many interests you have to juggle...even locally or on the state-level. And plus nobody wants surgery from somebody who is an "outsider" in the medical field with no prior experience but yet people think having no experience in policymaking makes one more qualified these days...

Yes but wouldn't it be a very sad time in democracy if the "everybody" you talk about is essentially a multimillionaire/billionaire  and / or famous celebrity / name recognition (i.e. Bloomberg, Schwarzenegger, Trump, Ventura....add Cynthia to the list). So really,  the sad thing about our democracy is that it is not everybody. Only the rich/celebs.

I couldn't agree with what JARETHAN says above, more. Well said Jarethan.

I really like Nixon’s campaign video, but I don’t have much knowledge on New York’s politics. Is Cuomo not favored?

Cuomo is extremely likely to be re-elected, but he's understandably worried about being "primaried" by a far left candidate, either Nixon or someone else.

If Nixon decided to run for NY city council, or state representative, or school board -- getting the needed experience in the day-to-day realities of governing, and building the network of supporters in all levels of government needed to be an effective chief executive -- then she would be a much more credible candidate. As is, there isn't much of a reason to vote for her.

She has no chance. The unions aren't going for her. Upstate isn't interested in her social justice platform since it means higher property taxes and more squeezing of the middle class. A 200k house in WNY pays 7-9k in taxes. How much more can you ask from these people?

I don't really think the main issue with any of these people was their celebrity status. Trump is a unique example and I've said enough about him elsewhere. Though I suspect we both hate most of Reagan's policies, he was an effective executive and political leader. I would submit that Schwarzenegger, Ventura, and Franken were at least as good as the average career politician, though I am aware that that's not saying much.
