Smokey Joe's Cafe coming Off-Broadway |
I wonder if we are ready for another review? The songs are classics though. I just saw Sweeney Todd got extended - Off Bway is thriving
I'm not ready for an other review, especially not one by Ben Brantley or Jesse Green. Another revue would be fine with me, however.
At least it is not going to take up valuable Broadway real estate. I have rarely hated a show as much as I hated this one. I was bored from beginning to end, but my animosity is probably directed at the fact that this is so mediocre and was such a hit, when so many much better and more ambitious shows have failed to run and / or to return their investments.
While I suspect that lightning would not strike twice if this returned to Broadway, one never knows.
I'm surprised that anyone has such passionate animosity toward Smokey Joe's Café. I mean, to its credit, it delivers exactly what the audience wants without even attempting a veneer of being anything more. I'd rather a revue like this than another hackneyed and slapdash jukebox book musical, where every scene is a eye-rolling slog that makes you want to scream, "JUST GET TO THE SONG WE KNOW."
It's such a loooong show; I remember it felt like it lasted three days. And every single number seemed oversung and driven into the ground.
That said, the groundlings seemed to adore it.
Newintown hit the nail on the head. I was bored out of my mind from beginning to end. Every once in awhile, you heard a song you liked; but, as with any show, if you were already really bored, it didn't matter. I can only think of one exception to that rule: when Grizabella sang Memory in Cats. It woke me out of a stupor in both acts...I went from fighting to stay awake to goosebumps in 30 seconds. That did not happen with this.

The sad thing is that you will reach an age where, even though you've known the difference between review and revue since you were ten, your fingers will go their own way and type in review. When you catch the error while proofing, all you can do is deliver a quick eulogy to your most recently deceased 100,000 brain cells.
