Was this expected? Seems out of the blue to me.

the radio job was not expected so far as I know but being led toward the exit at the Post was an ongoing project.

I wish he was leaving the theatre world entirely. And taking Ben Brantley with him.

His mediocrity is surpassed only by his irrelevance.

First he left as one of the hosts of Theater Talk and now he's out at the NYPost... what's going on with his career? Is he just retiring?

A little upsetting. I did like reading his column. Although, in recent years, it has been as "regular" with when and how often it was published.

A little more detail: https://broadway.news/2018/02/27/michael-riedel-leaving-new-york-post-co-host-radio-show/

"'I’ve been a tough columnist over the years, but when I talk about Broadway on the radio, I want to talk about Broadway in an enthusiastic way,' he said.

That is to say, instead of attending first previews of shows or focusing on behind-the-scenes drama, Riedel said he hopes to attend opening night parties and talk about the shows he enjoys."

I wouldn't be surprised if his exit was a little less voluntary than it's being spun to seem.

Well, that would be a novel approach for him.

Seems like he wants to rebrand his image somewhat.

Just curious but does anyone know what his political leanings are? IIRC I believe I once read he was a conservative Republican but haven't been able to confirm it.

Honestly, I'm gonna miss him. He had a role to play, he played it well, and he served a useful purpose as far as I'm concerned. That said, it can be a bit grating to be the whipping boy of Broadway for doing a job in a certain persona, so here's hoping that radio gives him the freedom he wants to actually express positivity about shows that he personally wishes to talk about.

...I would think that one could co-host a morning radio program and write a regular column.

Just curious, what did you see his (useful) "role" as?

I'll miss his column too. I love reading theater gossip. Just fun and interesting.

He points people's attention to Broadway. Not that anyone on this site needs it, but for the general population, they might be more apt to read a gossip column than a full-on profile, feature, or anything else about Broadway otherwise.

I would be astounded if more than an infinitesimal fraction of Post readers are even aware of the existence of Riedel's column. (Which is probably at least one reason he's getting the boot.)

"

A gossip column seems a rather sad purpose to me. Pander to the lowest common denominator, eh?

Isn't that The Post's official mission?

One's political affiliation is all I need to know about a person. When there's a party that does not support the arts, is anti LGBT, against women's rights, pro guns, anti climate change and the list goes on.Theatre and politics have always merged in theatre history. Elfoolbuh, I suggest you research shows like THE CRADLE WILL ROCK and NO FOR AN ANSWER for starters. Then treat yourself to a ticket  to ANGELS IN AMERICA.
