Seriously.

The tour ended its US run in Kansas City, MO(May 29-Jun 3) and is now then touring throughout Japan August & September 2018. Japan schedule: Tokyo(Aug 15-21), Kanagawa(Aug 28-29), Shizuoka(Aug 30), Osaka(Aug 31 - Sept 2).

"Musical Comedies' Vogue Said to Be on the Wane" -- NY Times headline, 1902

People have been predicting the end of Broadway since forever. It will die when no one buys tickets. Period.

I was just looking through the articles about SJB playing Cher.. and I see no mention of her being confirmed for the Chicago production. Did I miss something or is she not doing Chicago? Or is it just not announced? Is it safe to assume she will be doing the Chicago run?

The theater is dead when it no longer adds anything valuable to our culture. Purchasing tickets indicates nothing except profits for producers.

Yeah, because Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen both becoming cultural phenomena, in sequential years, means nothing. Broadway should dim the lights permanently, already.

Damn right it does. And if you don't buy tickets, we don't get profit. And if we don't get profit, we don't have potential future investment capital. And if we don't have the money to finance stuff, where are your precious shows going to come from in this era where it takes more and more investors to raise smaller and smaller amounts of money because people are terrified of the risk factor? They call it show business for a reason. Think before you open your mouth, sweetheart.

And while I'm here: ignoring recent successes that don't fit your narrow definition of what theater should be is perfectly fine... as long as you acknowledge your definition is narrow.

Get a grip, man. First you say Broadway theatre is dead, then proceed to list only some musicals that have opened this season or will be opening soon. Now you're defending yourself by saying ALL theatre will die when it adds nothing of value to culture? Can you take a step back and look at how insane this sounds? Broadway isn't the be all, end all of theatre. Musicals aren't the be all, end all of theatre.

Hopefully only for the moment. There is lots of musical talent out there, and these lousy jukebox musicals (you can add A BRONX TALE to the list) have got to come to an end some time soon...

The theater is dead when it cannot support anything but big, bloated, vulgar musicals. Theater is dead. Sorry.

.Ooh Harry Potter! Ooh Donna Summer! Ooh The Cher Show! Ooh the Go-Gos

Yeah, because Margaritaville and Spongebob are doing SO well.

There have always been rough seasons and even then, there are usually at least one or two great shows in those seasons. This season it's The Band's Visit.

I really like Cher but I doubt this will be as interesting of a show as I would like it to be. With the 3 Chers, I'm assuming it's going to be something like Summer, or, if we're lucky, a Lifetime biopic.

Love this gal and agree with the posters who despair over the lack of originality recently.  Not going to Chicago this time, a luck thing.  Go Steph.

Going to ask this again, since my post got lost in the shuffle of people complaining about originality.

Do we know for certain that Stephanie is going to be doing the Chicago run? I have my tickets, and I am excited regardless, I just want to know.

"Do we know for certain that Stephanie is going to be doing the Chicago run? ..."

It is nearly certain, as it has been reported by Forbes, Playbill, Broadway World, and her own website stephaniejblock.com.

They all specify she will be playing the role on Broadway with no mention of her playing it in Chicago

Out of town tryouts almost always include the Broadway cast.  If you look at Stephanie's Twitter account, several tweets are welcoming her back to Chicago.

When they say she'll play it on Broadway, they also mean Chicago. The Chicago run is the exact same thing.

Not necessarily though, hence the question. See Phillipa Soo for Amelie. Did Broadway but not out of town.

Yes. Yes she (Phillipa) did. And so will Stephanie. Your question has been answered.

But Phillipa wasn’t announced to be doing it on Broadway before the Berkeley run.

To be clear, I was referring to the Amélie Los Angeles run at the Ahmanson.

Samantha Barks was Amelie in the Berkeley Rep world premiere prior to Broadway.  IMHO she might have given the show more buzz on Broadway.
