HELP- I Need Opinions on College Audition Song Choices |
Auditioning is doing what you feel comfortable doing. Choose songs that you enjoy so you can do your best.
I wasn't too familiar with some of your choices so I came up with some other suggestions that work with your range. These are ones that may be worth a listen and are from older musicals so they can contrast a modern piece or two. Remember to do whatever you feel comfortable with and don't stress about it.
Legit: "What's the Use of Wondrin" from Carousel is AMAZING.
Mid Range: "Not a Day Goes By" from Merrily We Roll Along could work really well in your mid range. (listen to Betsy Wolfe's rendition!!!) It goes up to an F#5 and down to a D4. It's Sondheim, so you may want to factor that in, but it works with your "Disney range". "Crossing a Bridge" from Anastasia would be my other choice. I would probably not do the Shrek one for the reason you stated.
Belt: "As Long as He Needs Me" from Oliver! is awesome if you can really sell it. It goes up to a D5, but only for an eighth note I believe.
Break a leg!!
Thank you for those suggestions! I'll look into them! Woman from Pirate Queen also hits a D5 belt for a split second so that doesn't bother me much.
So I'm replying back to this message board again because I think I narrowed down my choices based on the sheet music I already have in my book to my best ones. Thank you for the suggestions- I think I might add What's the Use to my book in the future, it's just the audition is on February 24th, so I need something I'm comfortable with! So here are two audition packages for the audition, which one do you guys think will be better? I really want a Golden Age song, I just don't know which one: belt or legit! Haha.
Option 1:
One Normal Night (The Addams Family)- Contemporary Comedic Uptempo; Belt
Falling in Love With Love (Boys from Syracuse)- Pre-Golden Age Medium Tempo; Legit
Crossing A Bridge (Anastasia) or Sympathy, Tenderness (Jekyll&Hyde)- Contemporary Dramatic Ballad; Mix
Option 2:
If My Friends Could See Me Now (Sweet Charity)- Golden Age Comedic Uptempo; Belt
The Finer Things (Jane Eyre: The Musical)- Contemporary Medium Tempo; Legit
Crossing A Bridge (Anastasia) or Sympathy, Tenderness (Jekyll&Hyde)- Contemporary Dramatic Ballad; Mix
My first choice for the mix song is Crossing A Bridge, the only thing holding me back is that the piano accompaniment is a bit daunting, and Sympathy, Tenderness is a bit easier for the pianist. Also my two contrasting monologues are:
Comedic- Denise's Monologue from Talk Radio "You know that feeling when you drop a teaspoon down the garbage disposal..."
Dramatic- Joan's monologue from Saint Joan (George Bernard Shaw) "They told me you were fools..."
I considered the "Glunch" monologue from Eleemosynary, but I feel like it's overdone? I don't know- I'm not great with knowing if monologues are overdone!
