Fiddler National Tour |
Waiting on pins and needles myself, as I’m hoping it makes a stop near me. Hope we hear more details soon!
There's open calls going on for the tour next week...

I had heard it would be Equity. NetWorks has both Equity and Non-Equity tours, so them presenting it isn't a clear answer. They currently have THE KING & I and PHANTOM on the road.

If you read the listing, it very clearly says it's non-union:
Union: Non-Union
SALARY: $450/week min. for ensemble $550/week min. for principals (plus housing allowance/per diem and travel)
I'm shocked that a non-Equity tour is getting a 3 week engagement at the Pantages. I'm also shocked Equity isn't raising a stink about this- this is a first national tour of a major revival playing major cities- it should be going out on an equity contract.

I'm also shocked it's going straight to Non Union, and I can't imagine Equity didn't try, but considering the it's predecessor that was the recent revival wasn't a hit by any stretch...I mean did we REALLY need the millionth revival of Fiddler? But even the lowest level SETA could have worked here, I think.
I just don't get it, even Anastasia is going SETA (Don't know what level) and I'm still salty about that. Granted, the cast gets some profit share on SETA tours, but I still never saw a reason for a SETA Anastasia, lowest Production tier could have totally been done.

Yuck. Really disappointed.
It's also interesting that Bartlett Sher is apparently still attached to direct. If he is going to be at the helm of this nonunion tour, I'm sure he'll get some great performances out of a non-equity cast.

You are not. I try to avoid them- the non-Equity shows that we get are the ones I always gift my season tickets to someone else for.

I am a big fan of "Fiddler on the Roof", but if its not a good cast, it can be a long frickin' night in the theatre!
that being said the recent Rent, Sound of Music, and Into the Woods tours were all fantastic... theres a lot of great young talent coming out of the mfa programs
and heres hoping they get the best talent. without a fantastic tevye, this show unravels quickly and painfully....

The only power AEA has over this is on the PR front, hence the "Ask if it's Equity" campaign. I'm guessing that people who want to see Fiddler on the Roof (I don't know who these people are, but they do exist) don't care too much about the salaries and benefits of those in the show, and the producers know this.
I really don’t understand this decision to make it non-eq, especially considering its the first tour of this revival. I get why Cinderella and sound of music are both non-eq as they were both equity before. It also seems like they are going into mainly major markets the first year with not many one nighters

If you were producing any show, would you like to spend more money than you have to?
Hope Mr. Question Mark is up to snuff.
I find this so disappointing, Fiddler on the Roof is all about family and generational issues. Non-union actor tours (I think we can safely assume the musicians and stage crew will be union) tend to be cast very young. For Fiddler it seems very important that the show should have parents and children not just some ensemble members with beards or hair up in a bun. I find it hard to believe that Bartlett Sher would be actively involved in the tour (all though it certainly would be a trip back to reality after My Fair Lady with its big sets, big orchestra, big cast and luxury casting like Diana Rigg) but probably he has no say in the producers mounting whatever tour they want.
