Riverdale will be staging a musical episode this spring based around Carrie: The Musical and starring the similarly rage-filled (and arson-friendly) Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) as the titular telekinetic teen.

The episode is scheduled to air April 18 at 8 p.m. and will feature 11(!) songs from the musical. Carrie: The Musical, written by Lawrence D. Cohen with lyrics by Dean Pitchford and music by Michael Gore, first debuted on Broadway in 1988.

The Riverdale High version will be directed by “future Tony winner” Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) and a behind-the-scenes documentary will be shot by Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Fangs Fogarty (Drew Ray Tanner), last seen having a moment with Kevin in the student lounge, will be the Assistant Director. Read into that what you will.

Not surprisingly, most of the core characters have landed major roles (sorry Moose and Midge) in the show, which is being produced by the Lodge family. (Fred Andrews is providing the sets and lumber, obvs.) See the casting announcement below:

Even at its weakest, I love this show for its unapologetic commitment to both vaporwave aesthetic and "Twin Peaks" Season 2.

Leave it to a Hollywood publication to report on a Broadway show but use a photo from the movie version in the article. Sorry, it just annoys me!

Hate it all you want, but no one can deny that Riverdale is at its best when it’s full on campy and creepy. Which totally fits with Carrie, so I’m currently way too excited for this.

So for those that don’t know the show at all. Will this be a kind of backstage making of? Will they have full numbers on screen? Can we expect genuinely good performances and production or is it going to be ‘taking the piss’ of the show?

I’d say they’re going to take it as seriously as the material provides, I mean it is Carrie (very serious and emotional when it needs to be but comically cheesy at other times). And a good portion of the cast are pretty good singers and dancers- hence the actual band on the show/cheerleading team that are both geuninely great. It’s probably just going to be an entire episode of performances and dialogue; I mean they have to get 11 songs in there somehow.
