Bernadette's Costumes/hair/makeup#1

Just something that occurred to me...Bette always looked amazing when she came out on stage and I heard that she had like 3 or four dressing rooms, and multiple dressers and hair/makeup. It struck me that Bernadette's "looks" didn't have that level of polish. Maybe I'm wrong but I think you'll agree once you see the show. With the costumes...the top of Bette's red dress for the title number was breathtaking. Thin strands of diamonds leading to her neck...not Bernadette. She has a clunky, heavy looking necklace on that isn't even that sparkly? It just looks like it's weighing her down. Then I started looking at the detail from her other costumes and I wondered if they're cutting costs some? Everyone remakes on here about the photo they released...she looked great but frankly if someone would have been paying more attention to her hair/makeup and would fix her costume and go back and embellish the others as Bette's were I think we'd see a big difference. Also...Victor's didn't seem like it was tailored properly?

Sloppy...

I love this forum. Personally I didn’t notice - and all I thought was how good Bernadette looked and how good her body looked in those dresses. But I’ll look out for it haha.

You’re right! I was trying to find pictures of Donna in the red gown and I couldn’t find any official ones, but what I did find was more similar to what Bernadette was wearing.

I had the exact opposite reaction and I'm not the only one.  I thought Bernadette's costumes looked better fitting and more tailored to her body. I always thought (all 3 times) I saw Bette that she was too covered with turtle necks ect. In reference to Victor, the only thing I missed was DHP's puce flowery robe at the end. Victor's was more checkered.

All of Bernadette's costumes whether it's Mozart of the Jungle or stuff for the stage always seem to emphasize her cleavage.

Bernadette knows how to work those puppies. And she does - in “So long, Dearie”. Haha.

I fully understand how high-profile Bernadette as Dolly Levi is, but I can't remember the last time anybody has gotten so much intense scrutiny on these boards. When's the thread about the size of her pores on her left cheek gonna pop up?

from those pix, while the jewelry is different, I think the only other big difference is the lighting

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

There has been some tight moderation but before it was deleted Dollypop posted a thread asking about Bernadette’s pores. Hilarious. Love the enthusiasm!!

I would disagree with you regarding the Dolly costume. Bette wore a necklace that was more spider-web-ish than the one they have Bernadette wearing. It worked on Bette but based on the fit of Bernadette's costume, it would not have laid correctly on her chest. The new one is not a subtle but has the same impact as Midler's. They obviously tailored the costumes to Bernadette. Hopefully, that will happen with each Dolly that comes into the show. Nothing is worse than a lead in a show wearing an outfit that is totally wrong for their body type just because the original star wore it that way. (Well, that's not exactly true because there are worse things, but you get what I mean....)

Yeah the new necklace is big, lunky and doesn’t catch the light as beautifully as Bette’s did... she should sparkle like a diamond when she enters! Bette sure did with those amazing stones. My guess is Ruskin is going to tweak a bit more. Bernadette needs to sparkle!

I may be wrong, but after looking at both photos closely it seems that Bette's had a flesh colored mesh starting at the straps and going across her bust. This could be why her necklace was bigger, as they were trying to hide this illusion. Bernadette's seems to be her actual skin. Its the opposite but it sort of reminds me of when Jennifer Holliday replaced Heather Headley in The Color Purple and then all of Shug's costumes included a matching short jacket/cardigan hiding her upper arms, even the flesh toned one where Celie is supposed to be bathing her!
