The NY premier of the highly anticipated new play from Martin Mcdonagh begins previews at the Atlantic Theatre Company this evening!!

I will not be attending until next weekend, so if anyone can provide information such as the run time or their Back25 seat location, I would greatly appreciate it. Additionally, friends of mine are curious to hear cancellation line reports.

Fingers crossed this play is as good as I am hoping!

Not to be didactic, but it's Hangmen.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Is the Broadway transfer likely? Looks impossible to see it otherwise.

This seems to be following in the latest off broadway ticket scheme. Initially they only put up a small percentage of tickets for sale so it appears the entire run is sold out to create such a high demand. Then they trickle out many tickets daily at premium prices that people will snap up quickly because of the inflated demand. The amount of tickets released for each show in the days leading up to the performance is much more than required to be held back, so this scheme is quite obvious.

I'm not sure the scheme is even half as obvious, let alone nefarious, as you seem to think... It's an extremely well-reviewed transfer from London, by a major playwright, playing a limited 7-week run at a relatively tiny off-Broadway theatre.  On top of that, the run is exactly coinciding with awards season in Hollywood, where said playwright's new film is not only right in the running (it's already won Best Picture from the Golden Globe and Critic's Choice awards), but is currently (as of today, Jan. 19th) the #1 odds-on favorite at Gold Derby website to win Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.

Tickets went onsale to the public back in October, and for subscribers well before that.  By the time I purchased seats a day or so after they went onsale, a lot of good seats were indeed gone but there were still plenty left.  Family and friends who I alerted to it, however, said there were already slim pickings a few weeks later, even before "Three BIllboards" was released in November.  If the theatre has held back some seats (as I'm sure they have), then it's possible you'll see a few scattered seats made available - and yes, probably for premium prices - throughout the run.  But anyone who's surprised that the show is basically sold out at this point, let alone thinks it's all part of a grand conspiracy, is a bit of a fool, I'm afraid.

All-in-all: meh.

Not horrible but certainly not top-shelf McDonagh. The first act could have used at least 20 minutes of editing. Truth be told, I didn’t really care about what happened next.
If he weren’t one of my all time favorite playwrights, I would have left during intermission.

I will say that the second act was definitely better than the exposition-laden first and we finally got some of that brilliant, sardonic, McDonagh humor. But, ultimately, the ending was foreseeable about 45 minutes into the play. Sadly, this will likely be a forgotten play.

Notably, there are similar themes here that are more fleshed out in Three Billboards. If nothing else, it made me realize that I very much enjoyed Three Billboards...and really really want a revival of The Pillowman.

As a positive, even in early previews, the cast is in top form. Though I did find it difficult to understand some of the early dialogue in a way that I have never experienced before in his other plays.

One last addition: Martin was there tonight....and hot damn is he dead sexy. I guess, for that reason alone, I found this to be a most memorable evening.

The set is better than the play.

The cast was good – Maxwell Caulfield could give a master class on stage presence.

I had a Back25 ticket and was sitting in the second to last row, K. When I got to my seat I was nervous because the stage is quite low and thought I would not be able to see anything but the view was fine.

I absolutely LOVED this, it felt a lot lighter than his other plays I've seen and was really funny.  I and the audience were laughing out loud multiple times throughout the night. The acting was fantastic and the set was beautiful, I cannot recommend this enough and had a fantastic time. I really hope this transfers at some point. The show ran 2:15 with an intermission.

I loved this as well. So brilliant, every bit McDonagh, if a bit more mild than his usual work. Very well directed too.

The scene change between Scene 1 and 2 is way too long but then I saw the set for Scene 2 and was blown away, so all is forgiven. Act 2, Scene 1 got an applause break because Johnny Flynn STEALS the show. He's so good, as is the rest of the cast. Get in that theater somehow. I'd really love to see this transfer.

For those wondering about Back25, I was in the middle of row J, three rows from the back. Great view. I can't imagine anywhere would be a bad seat.

I have to ask: how was this so brilliant?

I was excited about seeing this until that interminable set change at the top of act one. Everything that followed seemed like a parody of a McDonagh play. Johnny Flynn was new to me however, so I will give credit to this production in introducing his talent stateside.

They added four performances and tickets go on sale Wednesday at noon, so you still have a shot!

Saw this Saturday night.  We joined the ATC this season mostly due to McDonagh, but also for Rajiv Joseph and Stephen Trask.  Had seats on Row B (which has no step up from Row A, so was a bit more obstructed than other rows).  We've seen everything McDonagh has done except for Lonesome West and Connemara, and we started with Pillowman, which was SO heavy.

That scene change from 1 to 2 was incredible.  Yes it's slow, but the payoff is incredible.

We really enjoyed the show, thought it was well worth the time and money.  Wouldn't rate it among our top 3, but it was better than Behanding, and parts of it really reminded of us Lieutenant of Inishmore, especially the ending.  Some very funny scenes -- McDonagh seems to be going more for the cheap laugh in his last few shows than his earlier works which really dared you to laugh at the darkness.

Is it worth the $90? I want to see it, but that's a lot of money compared to how I usually see shows.

Is anything worth $X?

If you have the disposable income and you like McDonagh, then yes, this is worth $90.  If you're not a fan of his work then no, it's not worth it.

If it does transfer, you know you won't be nearly as close for $90 in a B'way theater as you are at the Atlantic.

I feel like on Broadway it's likely to be a TDF kind of ticket. But oof. It's a lot of $$ to spend on a play, but I would like to see it. So maybe I'll just suck it up. Going to a good cause...? ha.

It seems like Back25 tickets are whatever they have available that night. I bought a pair, and our seats tonight were in row E and F, one in front of the other. For $25 it wasn't a huge deal that we weren't sitting next to each other, and they were good seats.

I'm a huge fan of McDonagh's work, and this wasn't my favorite of his plays, but it wasn't my least favorite, either. It was entertaining, though not as dark or as deep as most of his work. The set was gorgeous and the acting was strong.

I thought the set was beautiful and acting top notch.  I agree that they could trim the first act by 5 to 10 minutes.  The second act really flies and packs a big punch.

Had a very enjoyable time but was hoping for more laughs.  Liked it much more than Behanding but it is not in the same league as Leenane or Inishmaan.

Mark Addy and Johnny Flynn are both truly menacing.

Saw this Friday night.  Thought it was a perfectly constructed play without a minute of wasted dialogue.  Acting TOP notch.  This is must transfer--more people need to see this beautifully acted and well-written play!

Can anyone provide the run time? Trying to coordinate some plans after the matinee, and would appreciate knowing what time I’ll be back on the street. Thanks!

According to Atlantic's website, it says it runs two hours and fifteen minutes including intermission.
