Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 1/14/18 |
Couple of interesting things to me:
-- To those who forever predict Kinky Boots' imminent demise, the gross for the first two weeks of the year is within 1% of what it was a year ago. I seem to think that Porter and Sands left a week ago; if they did, there was no real negative impact of box office, taking the prior year grosses into consideration.
-- Chicago grossed more in the same comparable weeks that it has in the past several years...I stopped looking at 2015. I am convinced that it is either never going to close, or simply that I will be dead before it does.
-- I guess I will see A Bronx Tale in Tampa when it tours. It is on the verge of hitting 500 performances. Even if it never returns its investment, a la Jekyll/Hyde and Shenandoah, to name two, it has run longer than I ever expected and is still filling close to filling that theatre regularly.
-- I am probably not too happy if I am the producer of Spongebob, although it must have surpassed its nut...the question is what happens next week when there is not a holiday week-end to buoy business. I have to assume they don't know what to do, although not living in the NYC area anymore, I don't know how much TV advertising they are doing, or if it is any good.
--Not a surprise to me, but I guess it is pretty clear by now that Uma Thurman is not a box office attraction, unless you count the first two weeks of previews as the indicator of her fanbase size.
-- The Play That Went Wrong should probably be re-named to (with the assistance of the Everready Bunny).

I wonder to what extent Jake Shears (the newest Charlie Price) will help bring in more people to see "Kinky Boots."

It's currently only on sale through March 11th, according to the Hudson's website. Was the 25th the originally announced closing date? (I honestly don't remember).
If anyone had told me a year ago that in one year Bronx Tale would still be packing them in, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would be packing it in... I would have laughed in your face.
Am I correct in saying that Once On This Island is doing a little better than people predicted late last year?
I have selfish reasons for asking. I’m working outside NYC early next month. My co-trainer is interested in exploring NYC with me (he’s been there before for work, but is sorta clueless about what to do). We’re going into NYC by train on 2/8 and leaving 2/10.
He was also not aware of all the shows we could see (even after I sent him a link). His list included shows I had already seen plus The Parisian Woman (eek!). We agreed to avoid shows either of us had seen (we’ve both seen Wicked on tour). I also let him know about the poor reviews for The Parisian Woman so he took that off the list. He also has a budget of no more than $80. He’s basically letting me pick now.
There will only be 4 musicals that I haven’t seen playing when we’re there. No real desire to see A Bronx Tale or Anastasia. But I would really like to see both Once On This Island and (to my surprise) Spongebob Squarepants. Plus those last two are solid bets to be affordable at TKTS if everyone thinks they won’t suddenly shutter before then.
I figure that Spongebob has a better chance of running longer (despite its lower overall box-office numbers and likely higher nut) as it has that Nickelodeon money behind it.
He got us free tickets to Seth Meyers if we get into town early enough (doubtful) on the 8th. So I’m hoping we can find a way to see a show on 8th and 9th but right now OOTI is the one I want to see the most if we only get to see a show on the 9th.
Would I be correct in assuming that "Springsteen on Broadway" just posted the all-time biggest last-week-to-this-week jump :)
A $2.4 million difference is one for the history books!

They did not have any performances the week before last, which is why it lists $0 as “Last Week’s Gross.”

I thought that your Cher analogy was comical, and apt. Re Shears, It will be interesting to see. I had never heard of Brendon Urie, nor am I familiar with Shears, so I have no specific expectation. Urie sales presumably also benefited from appearing in the peak summer months, when there were also a lot of tourists in the mix. Will be interesting to see...as I say, I have no sense of what the analogous group to Urie's fanbase is, in terms of numbers, passion, availability of money, etc..
I find it interesting how certain shows seem to plateau at a certain level, but that it appears to be sufficiently over their operating nut..

That’s what was listed on IBDB. Could be wrong though.
If you just do a google search of the ibdb page and you don’t click on the page you see it says it will close March 25....
.... but when you actually go into the page it says the 11th
A Bronx Tale is actually very good. And that commercial on the nbc 11 o'clock news last night was awesome.
I think Once on this Island has the potential to become this year's The Color Purple. I saw the show on Monday and it was a full house. It is also a strong contender for the revival category given how new and fresh it feels.
Brandon Urie definetly contributed to the uptick in sales for Kinky Boots. His band, Panic at the Disco, is hugely popular and just hassle their most successful, mainstream album to date. He has a huge female following of varied ages
Jake Shears band, The Scissor Sisters, has a devoted following, but not at the level of Urie. They also haven’t put out music in quite some time. I imagine when the girl from Pentatonox comes into the show, the box office will get a bigger boost.

I saw this show tonight and thought Shears was okay, but that J Harrison Ghee was absolutely amazing as Lola. Very different from Billy Porter but just as valid of an interpretation. Of course there wasn't the tender rapport between Ghee and Shears that existed between Sands and Porter. I feel like Kinky Boots keeps running because they've been able to maintain a high standard for such a long-running show. I've seen this show three times since October and never felt like anyone was phoning it in.

Plus Kristin Maldonado from Pentatonix also has quite a following as well. The group has been everywhere recently. I don't know if it's Urie level, but certainly people will see it for her.
